Big brother security......closer than you think?
Discussion
I often wonder when I watch films like "Minority Report" and "The 6th Day" whether the national "big brother, electronic, eye retina scanning type security" is a likely future reality.
Now some of you may be thinking "it won't happen" and "it's science fiction", but consider the advantages to the Police and Government. I reckon the technology is almost there to set up something like this. Or perhaps insertion of an electronic chip at birth to monitor your lifetimes movements!!
The way things are going in this country, this is a distinct possibility. Imagine the arguaments for and against. Personal privacy/civil liberty vs total monitoring of a persons whereabouts. The only problem I can see for the Police is that most of them would no longer be needed, as it could all be controlled centrally. Am I being paranoid or has anyone else ever had these thoughts. Comments invited by all. P.S. No I have not gone off my rocker, and no I don't need to get out more

Yeah, i've often thought the possibility of this sort of thing is very dangerous. Christ, imagine in the future if they manage to pass laws allowing the authorities to track anyone, any time.
They say that the technology we see today is some way behind the government etc. The real-life capabilities of MI6,NSA etc have probably moved on a hell of a lot since the time Enemy of the State was made...scary.
Personally, I'm dead against this sort of stuff.

big brother is ok, so long as you have nothing to hide...
Bring it on, as far as I'm concerned...sooner the better...

But Street, surely the idea of "someone" watching you, following you, tracking you, monitoring you is a bit of a concerning one?
Use the idea of "if youve nothing to hide" as an excuse for this kind of snooping, goes directly against the presumption of innocence that our legal system is founded on.
Its basically saying, "We dont think you are innocent so we'll watch you 24/7 just in case you do something naughty that we can charge you cash for".
You should be asking yourself where this is all going. I do, and the answer isnt a nice one.
If you really think that living in a world where everyone is tracked and surveilled by unknown agents of government will be a better one than the present one, you only have to cast your mind back to East Germany, not so long ago. Citizens actively encouraged to "grass" on anyone they "thought" might be worthy of investigation. A country ruled by the fear of being dragged out of bed at an unearthly hour and disappearing, never to be seen again.
If thats what you want then fine; Its not what the rest of us want.
Tracking people is a step in the direction to a big brother state of horrific proportions. Oh and btw, youd be out of a job, why would a "policeman" be necessary in this surveilled world, when a computer recognising and tracking every person ever born would be doing it?
Ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee.

Bib have known to be "wronguns".
I guess you would agree to having a camera and mike attached to you 24hrs a day "just in case"? (Given the nature of your job and the potential for being "got at" by the criminal classes.)

I take it that if someone walked up to you and started going through your pockets for a nosey you wouldn't complain as you had nothing to hide?
PMSL! The point is very well made though.

You can be tracked right now, very accurately using your mobile phone.
Just dropped mine down the bog.
That'll fix 'em
Ha Harrrrrr..............
Useful tip!!
Switch OFF the phone and when dialed a " the phone my be switched off" message is given.
Bad news! Dead giveaway.
But! Put the phone in a tin or "slide" the battery off instead of "switching off" and a "not responding" message is recieved when dialed. You were in a poor reception area weren't you!!
try it!
Few weeks ago - we read that a government committee headed by Margaret Hodge seeks to set up up a database for all children unde age 18.
This proposes to give all under 18s an ID number which would include the child's medical records, police records, academic records, family details - including details of family "Black Sheep" and "skeletons found in the cupboard".
Parents would have to appy to see their own child's records under the Data Protection Act.
The "idea" behind this is that this will "help police detect children at risk"...
Er?
Somehow - I do not think so - and remember I am trying to repair damage to two youngsters in my care - one seriously abused and the other was born an addict - which is why they are long term with us. I fail to see how a microchip embedded in their bodies would have prevented damages being inflicted on them.
However, if we did start now with microchips in all our children - then in 20 years or so we will have half the population in this country with a form of electronic tagging.
For those who say "Fine" I have nowt to fear!"
Holds true so long as we have a benign government and democracy.
But in today's climate this concept is epehermal - and what we should learn from history is that little tyrants can come to power and abuse this.
I have no doubt that Wildy will be online sooner or later with full claws drawn .... I would take cover if I were you - Gary
"Bring it on!" indeed ...
We would emigrate... we are in fact considering this option now ....but cannot decide whether or not grass would indeed be greener ....
