hi i went out yesterday after changing the plugs in my e36 328i sport coupe and was basically gunning it a little to blow out the cobwebs, quiet road, only in the distance this brand new bmw 328i was following and for some reason it didnt click that it may have been a cop, not knowing this as an undercover cop car from the area (usually word gets around in work of various people spotting the local undercover cars)

anyway cut a long story short on a dual carriageway road (but ith 50mph limit) he caught me doing 70mph and pulled me over just after i slowed down as the traffic appeared infront at the top of the hill i was pulling up (testing the plugs i guess for torque/missfire performance)

was a very fair cop, polite etc etc said he had to send the ticket off for summons and that it would likely be 60quid and 3 points

been driving 8years and clean lisence until now

is this the case or is it likely to be worse news?

cheers all frown

ive even started looking into taking the 328i off the road and buying a suzuki swift sport or 2.0 focus as those cars are slightly cheaper for commute to work and slightly harder to achieve driving ban speeds without noticing (that and the 328i can have a rest as shes 1996 and used daily)

I kept getting into trouble in a 325, admittedly it got away from me a few times with how quick I ended up going, and while accelerating into a 50 from a 30 I was rightly nabbed at 43mph. 3 points/£60, declare to insurers for 5 years and drove with a bit more awareness in future

If it's your first 3 points you shouldnt see much if any increase in your premiums

The cop had a BMW 328 - probably a car every PHer under 30 aspired to?

Only in E36 format. You have much to learn.

Er PH worthy - 328i
Tricking people (maybe not INTO speeding as such) by being unmarked

I'm impressed if you could tell a 328i from any other 3 series just by looking in your mirror.

Maybe you can become my very personal instructor and, well, show me "things" I "dont know"?

Mind you, I am a burly captain of industry with a moustache. And a general fondness for leather.

Even if it was an aspirational car (not to me), the OP doesn't say he was tricked into speeding, or that he was racing it. Just that he didn't clock it was an undercover "cop".

Clearly i didnt know it was a 328i in the mirror but he did mention that it was because he asked about my 328 and said its easily done speeding in a 2.8 6cyl

I'm not a holier than thou type, but my mileage is such that I rarely have to think 'is that an unmarked car?' as much as I may have done in the past.

Was the police car badged 328i or debaged?

I've always been puzzled by this attitude. Why is it so hard to stay in control with 200hp or so? Plenty of us with more power in lighter cars manage. It's just an excuse for carelessness.

Speeding is 'easily done' in most average family cars.

So why would you have a "lighter more powerful car" if you didnt intend to speed now and again mate? Bit of a careless comment there?!

Enjoyment of acceleration (up to speed limits)
Enjoyment of handling
Build quality
Wanting a particular make of car
Satisfaction of ownership

There's a few reasons for you. My Range Rover is capable of breaking the speed limit on all roads - as is my 911.

I didn't buy either with the intent of speeding.
