Hi all

On several occasions around London in the last few weeks, I've been behind drivers who, in free flowing traffic and without warning, have completely stopped before box junctions for a few seconds before proceeding. Sometimes they've needed a couple of beeps to get going again. This is despite the space after the junction being completely clear and it being our right of way. Obviously irritating/dangerous when there are no hazards ahead and then the person in front decides to perform a near-emergency stop.

Has anyone else noticed this? I've never seen it before now. Can't help thinking that it's possibly a result of tickets/letters being sent out thanks to the new box junction cameras - in which case we have more counterproductive cameras on our hands Why not educate these drivers, etc, etc....

Cheers

You aren't breaking the law if the exit is clear.

Yes. However these drivers may well have been sensitised by the 'CCTV monitoring box junction' and 'you may be reported for...' signs that are springing up in the capital and elsewhere, Newcastle is another place that springs randomly to mind. Same over red light cameras. So many times folk brake hard on approach to a NSL dual carriageway light even when no red light camera can be seen, and then trickle through, just...in...case...

There's a box junction in Bedford at which everybody inverts the rules - they always proceed into the box when their exit is not clear, but stay outside it when they're waiting to turn right and the right turn is obstructed by oncoming traffic.
