DVLA Tax Camera

Saw a DVLA Tax Camera checking unit this morning on the A33 south of Reading. 2 cameras checking numberplates on the dual carriageway. Had a sign up saying what it was doing.
I assume the cameras recognise the numberplates and then check back to the DVLA database for valid tax discs.

I hope they catch and prosecute all the tax dodging scum.

Totally agree with you catch the lot. They are likely to have either no MOT or Insurance or both.

Why can the Goverment not do away with a car tax disc instead charging road tax per litre of petrol and make the motorist display a current insurance/mot disc in the window

It can vouch it was working earlier today. I was returning to the office with a colleague in his new (to him) car when a very friendly and polite motorcycle officer pulled us over. Apparently the car was showing as no keeper on the ANPR system.

After an explantion that the car had only just been purchased and a quick check of my colleagues docs we were on our way in less than 5 minutes.

One was parked up on the A64 into York a couple of weekends ago. About a mile further on the traffic came to a standstill, after 10 mins of crawling along I came to the point of the incident that was slowing people down.....

rubbernecking at someone getting pulled by the bib attached to the van. Fkin muppets.

Almost, but not quite. One in Wembley/Willesden area today. ANPR on tripods. Protected by vehicles for obvious reasons, but.....1st vehicle was half on kerb, straddling cycle lane on DYL. 2nd vehicle was parked against give way lines from a side street again on DYL. Plethora of fluorescent 100yds up road. In a bus lane, DYL again! This time the removal truck was also there, parked on DYL with "No loading" stripes on kerb!

1st day I didn`t have digicam in the truck for a while - bugger.

I agree that these people should be caught, but I was under the impression that you could not break the aw to enforce the law?

Put me straight then Gary!

The law states that certain laws can be broken in such circumstances..

ie: double yellow lines can be parked upon by police and government vehicles in the pursuance of their duty...

In addition, local councils allow SCP vans to park on grass verges etc...

Permissable, whether we like it or not..

My office had a little jolly, ahem, fact find finding trip down to our Support HQ to look at our vehicles. This included ANPR. ANPR is getting smarter. There are new guidelines for the Insurance datababses, meaning info. should be more up to date. PNC and local force intelligence is also checked in seconds. The poor old traffic bloke who crewed the van (never thought I'd say that!) told me how people come up to his van to have a go at him, thinking it's a scamera van. He then explains, with the patience of a saint, how it all works and how it catches burglars, drug dealers, finds stolen/uninsured/no current keeper cars etc.... and then usually gets a handshake and comments such as "Would you like to park in my road etc...."

If they changed all the scamera vans to these I'm sure
1) The overall death and injury rate would go down (linked with criminal behaviour)
2) Overall crime rate would go down.
3) Massive increase in public support.
4) But maybe a decrease in revenue?

Trouble is...I had to go to a residents meeting the other evening...and all my colleague and I were asked to do was to return on any day between 5pm and 7pm on sucharoad and to bring our laser gun.

That's all the residents wanted. They weren't overly concerned about unruly kids, or criminal damage etc...they just kept harping on about 'bloody maniacs on the road' and 'someone is going to be killed again..mark my words sonny'

While these people are writing to the chief of police, their MP and anyone else who can open an envelope, speed camera vans and their use will no doubt continue..

Why is that the only solution offered. More trafpol, a visible presence is what these people want, a 'beat bobby'. Speeding in residental areas is right in these peoples faces, as it is in mine. There are persistent offenders, same time everyday, as they go to and from a regular place, even at night. A 'beat bobby' would have noticed and slowly removed or re-educated these persistent offenders.

'Who controls the Police', what that faceless body that relies on the postal system to lighten ones pocket.

More trafpol is what's needed..but it's cheaper to have a Gatso..or a camera van..

As I've said before, and you agreed with me before, an occasional Trafpol outside a school at opening/closing time would have a salutory effect on not just the kids, but parents and local scum too.

....but this does not excuse them from the duty of care they have to not become a hazard to peds, traffic etc.

That may be true of the van but not sure I am convinced the DVLA are doing a good job. They recently issued me a penalty notice on the station car. Said it had not been taxed since 2000. They did not seem surprised when I rang up and said I had a copy of the SORT, it had been off the road for about 2 years., I still had last years tax disk from when I put it back on the road, and had a current tax disk. I sent all the details and copies to them twice and they dropped the penalty, I had to send it twice of cause because they lost the first one.

This is all fine, but surely there must be loads of scrotes driving about uninsured etc, who have scammed the number plate off another similar car. It won't detect them, will it?!

No you're right..it wont detect them...but don't get bogged down in this smamming of number plates etc...it's really is rare..no matter what people tell you..
