My daily drive is about 30 miles on B-roads with a bit of motorway at each end. I work flexitime so the roads aren't chock-full, but there is always a reasonable amount of normal traffic travelling at 50-60mph. Fortunately the roads are (for the most part) very open with good visibility, and I am able to make good progress. I tend to travel at around 70-90mph (obviously depending on visibility, local traffic conditions etc) and perform numerous overtaking maneuvres. I guess I would overtake 10-20 cars each way, no silly last-minute stuff though, I try and keep it calm!

I'm pretty well equipped to deal with laser/radar (not that I've ever seen a speed trap on these roads in three years) and for the most part visibility is good enough that I can scope out each section of the road ahead before "committing" to it. However, I'm just wondering what the odds are of coming across an unmarked police car on this kind of road? Do the unmarked units stick to busy motorways?

How do you think they get to the busy motorways?

It sounds as if you're pretty much doing what I do.
Enjoy yourself, keep it calm, keep it safe, and do your best not to get caught. I wish you well.

So far as unmarked police cars are concerned, obviously they do not confine themselves to busy motorways. We saw one (a sort of burgundy coloured Volvo S40 - registration Y 579 HDT maybe) in Scarborough a week or two ago stopping a motorcyclist on Scalby Road.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

My 35 miles to work includes 8 miles of unclassified lanes. It's one lane each way and there are some short straights. It's a real hoot if the weather is dry. If they ever put a speed check through the bends they would not catch me speeding, as any faster and I fear I might crash. On the straights, it's another matter.

It appears to be in no mans land between 2 police forces and the only time I've seen a police car (marked or unmarked) is when the WATERLOO cup is on and the HUNT protestors are out in force.
