Plod cut me up!
Discussion
Travelling along today at a leisurely 45mph in a convoy of 4: NSL single carriageway with few overtaking opportunities: Truck in front (over his limit incidentally but what the hell), car behind him quite content, no rush, me 3rd, and a Dyfed-Powys Plod Volvo (CV03 D**) bringing up the rear.
All of a sudden Plod decides he's had enough and comes piling past with less than 100 yds between him and an oncoming artic, then cuts sharply in front of me with inches to spare. And there he stayed, 3rd in the line, for the next 4 miles.
In my capacity as a civilian road user, Mr. Ossifer, I feel it is my duty to advise you that your driving on this occasion was less than exemplary, and that you fully deserved the blinding you got from that artic driver!

Maybe hes just aiming to join the collection of police officers in the area who have met their death in such circumstances. 18 months or so ago an experienced officer managed to have a head on whilst he was off duty. Evidence pointed to it being driver error (his), although I dont think it was proven.

Can you remember anything else? his name? location of accident? his force?

Not a huge amount. He was off duty, it was on the a44 somewhere not too far from aberystwyth and he was driving a peugeot 306. cant find any links on the old google...
Have a look on....

Oh dear, that sounds like a very bad example to be setting the rest of us.
I wonder if his frustration at being in a queue of closely spaced vehicles (not leaving overtaking opportunities on a one at a time basis) get the better of him. As a result did he wish to force open the gaps a bit? An unhappy scenario all the same.
Best wishes all,
Dave.

Would an off-duty BiB who died in circumstances unrelated to their job be included on that website, then?
Not trying to wind anyone up; genuinely interested.
{edited to add:} I've answered my own question by trawling through some of the entries... they do seem to be a bout half & half on & off duty, which makes the title page seem a bit misleading.

I recall reading that a police officer is on-duty while travelling to and from a police station, so the site is techincally correct.

Doesnt the highway code state that you should leave enough gap in front of you for another car to overtake? I get very annoyed when I cant overtake someone because the gap is so small in front of them - it happened on Sunday on the bike, I didnt have enough room to overtake both vehicles, and couldn't guarantee being able to fit in the gap he left - so I had to sit behind the swine.
I think we're likely to have hit the solution. Either:-
a) The copper left it a lot tighter than he should to overtake, forcing him to cut the thread-originator up. Plod mistake, and careless, frankly.
b) All traffic, INCLUDING the thread originator, were travelling in "tight formation", and the copper got "fed up" of waiting. Again, plod error, but provoked by poor driver behaviour by everyone else.

Out of interest, how was the gap so small that you were cut up by his attempts to get past the queue?
Or, was the gap large enough, but he just cut in too close to the front of your car?
I was in a bus! I was leaving a 2-3 second gap between myself and the car in front. With a 10-ton bus this is quite a wise thing to do. The problem is that at 45mph a 3-second gap amounts to 198 feet, or 66 yards, which many following drivers consider big enough for them to encroach into.
Plod's mistake was in not allowing for, or perhaps not even being aware of, the oncoming traffic, hence the carve-up.
Hope this answers havoc's question too
