Can't complain. Fair cop. The front plate was basically taking the piss, and the discussion with said traffic cop was refreshingly down to earth and honest.

I *knew* it was way too small, so I was carrying the full size one in the boot.

I was perfectly prepared to pay the £30, and have a HORT1 or whatever to get it checked by an MOT centre.

To the officers credit, I offered to change it there and then, and he didn't write me a ticket. As I live about 300m from the cop shop, I'm no going to take the piss. I've had my warning, and if they see the car again with a small plate, I'd fully expect them to throw the book at me.

The officer also checked tax, tyres, insurance etc.

Mr E...

I presume you've had the plate on for some time? If so, you probably feel it's been worth the time...

Are you going to keep the legal/regulation one on..or will you be reverting back to the mars bar size one..again soon..?

Plates been on a couple of months. Done partially for increased airflow over the multiple rads, and dare I say it - partly for asthetics.

The mars bar ( ) will not be going back on - simply because I feel I've had my warning. If the same guy drives past me again (quite likely) he's going to be pissed off that I told him I'd change it, and he trusted me and didn't write the ticket.

I considered it sensible policing, and will therefore do as he asked.

If he'd been a git about it, and fined me etc, I'd get a smaller one....

Are you sure it was only the size he was unhappy about? If so, it suggests a new dodge... have a full size plate, but still with nothing written on it

Good for you..nice to know that warning do work occasionally and we don't have our backs pissed up against....

Just to let you know...if you had left it on..or got one smaller...a recent outcome at a magistrates court near me for a driver who refused to comply with a VDRS for small number plate: £300 fine and DVLA withdrew the number plate...bloke had to go back to the original plate and had to pay £80 for documentation fees...

AFAIK picture needs to be already on the net. right click - hit properties - copy address. To post pic, start with [pic]then address, then [/pic] (no spaces).

Hope this helps

Indeed. As stated, I wasn't completly truthful with the officer concerned. I expressed some suprise that the plate was illegal as I had bought it in good faith.

He was an intelligent man, and saw right through me.

I'd read up on likely penaties, and considered it worth the risk , as worst case I'd get £30 and told to fix it.

I've had the warning. Fair enough.

Now, I can't have a sticky plate on the bonnet.

Can I have an 'Evo' style square plate offset instead?

(Seriously, there are 3 rads behind that plate, anything that gets in the way is not good)

If the plate is proper size...you'll be unlikely to get nicked. Although regs do say that the front plate should be all on one line...however the rear plate can be two seperate lines...

I don't think you'd ever get nicked with a square front plate...

Take care

Aha - but.....

Imported car. I can claim it doesn't take a normal plate.

Next doors Mustang has a square front plate - as to a lot of Evos I've seen.....

Doesn't really matter.

I think you might find there's an exemption if the car was not originally intended for sale in the UK, and cannot support a standard plate.

I'll try and dig it up.

This is something I have never quite understood. I don't drink/drive, I don't jump red lights, I don't cross solid white lines, I'm properly taxed/insured/licensed. The only thing I do is get my foot down where safe and appropriate.

Why bring attention to yourself by having an illegal number plate? You'll eventually get pulled and if the Plod is having a bad day you might get a ticket for it.

The way I look at it is that I reckon I am more likely to get away with some 'advice' if I am 100% legal in other areas and can demonstrate decent Roadcraft. I accept it depends on the BiB though.

St you need to naught boy

Imported cars are exempt from the number plate size rules as they often have different size apertures etc. I know this as I import a few cars & it says so on the DVLA documents supplied. Licensed number plate shops will also confirm this, alongwith your little black book that you hav'nt read recently

'Exempt' is a little strong - we fall under a different part of the reg that allows the use of a slightly smaller font than standard.
