Interesting statement this.

In my long and uneventful hours of driving I have been contemplating this.

So, if the public get the policing they deserve, lets focus on the main big thing at the moment - speeding.

This is NOT a public majority choice. If you go and ask the strightforward question to virtually any driver and sometimes non drivers, they will give the same anti-opinion on speed cameras.

But ok, assume for the minute that I am wrong about the speeding issue.

So what section of the public ever said they wanted less police on the beat, and burglers free reign to burgle people because help is only a speed camera van away...

The statement in itself is flawed. Ask people what they think about speeding, mixed views IMO leaning toward no more scameras. Ask people if its ok that a girl is raped and nothing or very little is done, or a house is burgled with plenty of evidence and witnesses yet the polce "can do nothing" and very very few people will say this is ok, so how is that the policing that they deserve?

Not having a go, just getting to the origins of that statement and I am sure someone will enlighten me and I can stop contemplating it and actually get on with some work (take your time )

Note for Gemini - I am not having a go at the police individuals, just the system they work in etc etc etc etc etc blah blah blah there we go im covered.

The bit I can't get my head round is this. Sorry if it develops into a bit of a rant.

People get stopped for speeding/fog lights, general numptyness what have you.

Response "Haven't you got anything better to do?"

So traffic units redeployed, appointment of chocolate fireguard Highways Agency civilian traffic officers.

We'll not go into increased deployment of electronic enforcement, as I'd lose the will to live.

But then we still get discussions as in scoobyzoom's "Misplaced priorities thread Think I expressed my feelings there.

So where have all these released resources gone to?

A disproportionate amount dealing with town centre ASB. Possibly.
Resource shift from proper plod to civilian posts? ie retirees/leavers replaced by civvies? Also possibly.

For a real life example, an Accident Investigation Branch (DVD knows which one I refer to) once exclusively staffed by ranks down from Chief Insp, all fully trained and experienced traffic officers and vehicle examiners basically doesn't exist in that form anymore. Now fully manned by civvies except for one sergeant, and they are trying to get rid of him! Everyone moans about the quality of service now being provided.

Did the public really ask for that? Does it really deserve that?

The public didn't and doesn't.

FiF

Don't worry I'll be OK after a cuppa and a Jaffa cake.

As I tried to point out in Has Anyone Actually Bothered To Read "All The Way"

As someone once said:

The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

And as someone else said:

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

Unfortunately, sometimes good men do something that is worse than nothing.

Too many supposedly pro motorists are more than happy to allow the anti-motorists a "fair" hearing when they will never allow the same courtesy in return.

Worse, too many pro-motorists will actually back the anti-motorists on certain aspects of their agenda:

"Drink" (not drunk) driving, "speeding" (in a "30"), "speeding" deserving punishment (because "it's the law"), mobile phones used while driving safely, spending motoring taxes on "public" (privately owned for profit) transport, congestion engineering and charging (because congestion allegedly is a problem/it will make more room for me), anti-pollution measures (despite them only applying to cars), the global warming/greenhouse myth...................

Unfortunately, that means "motorists" back the anti-motoring agenda 100%, and therefore we have no right to complain when it is put into place.

It got the usual warm reception from the usual suspects.

Hence my own, oft repeated, questions:

Do Motorists Deserve Everything They Get?

DO MOTORISTS DESERVE EVERYTHING THEY GET?

So, the answer from the "motorists" would appear to be a resounding "YES!" then.

It's true though....the public whinge when the police stop them for motoring matters....so increase in cameras and police redeployed elsewhere...

Now don't get me wrong...the police need to be deployed in many areas of trouble/danger, call it what you will, but endless whining about trafpol has meant the government has thought... Trafpol numbers down...public happy, we've delivered...cameras up...revenue up..public unhappy now...nevermind..you should have buttoned it...

Yeah - in talivans....on "rest days " or looking at naughty photos of naughty motorists - on their rest days......

And on rare day - when working on real crime - they have to fill in about 100s of sheets of paper and as many separate forms - and the chav gets let off on some triviality by politically correct twaza pretending to be a It will be interesting to see how you go on when you do 'em for hunting..... and how this will influence amount of fine etc.....

Nah! Dick and the Cornetto thought it would be a good way of raising cash ..... and putting all us creatures in cars in their place once and for all!

In the meantime - you get swamped with even more paperwork in triplicate - but get to work overtime with a hairdryer - and get to dress up with Highwayman's mask and hide behind a hedge .....

Or alternatively, the public whinge about being persecuted for trivial motoring offences.

The government reduces the number of trafpol, who are in a position to deal with serious motoring offences such as dangerous / drunk driving. The government increases the number of cameras and automated detection to persecute the ordinary motorist for minor, harmless (and I mean harmless) offences.

The police that have been freed up from traffic duties could then be used for an increased presence or the streets or to with burglary etc. Instead the government ties them up in more and more red tape and completely removes the ability for them to do their jobs. So we end up with a police force that doesn't have the resources to investigate crime.

How is this what the public want or deserve?

Well Street, Far be it from ME to defend Tory B. Liar, after all I notice the hall at the Party meet this week is decorated: Pink with a "Tinge" of Blue! MMmmh! sounds about right.
But wasn't it the CONSERVATIVES that introduced Speed Camera's and the present policy in order to reduce taxes paid by the better off?
Sorry Street, if you think that voting for some other party will change things for you, then deam on! It ain't goona happen.

OK Street, I'll tell it like it is.

Globilisation! great word that. All in all it just means that Countries all round the world are in competion with each other. Governments the world over are being forced to reduce costs to industry, otherwise they will go and pay some coolie 1 dollar a day to do the same job in some far flung outpost east of Java.

In order to do this, they MUST reduce taxes to industry, so "nationalised industries" had to be privatised, hence no need for tax money for them.

Next came the Public Services, they too had to go: Gas, water, Electricity, Railways, NHS, CAA Etc Etc.

Now Street, you work in a Service industry paid for by the taxpayer. You too will have, and will experience MORE cuts in the future. Speed camera's are a part of this policy, being self funding. More robots LESS cops. Cops cost tax money, hence you too are expenable.

Last point I promise, NO British Government is going to change this policy of lowering taxes, wages and services. They CAN'T do otherwise.

GoodNight all! Don't have nightmares!

Good for you, but most of us don't feel same way.

I have never felt so hard up since Bliar came to power.

I am earning more than ever before, but the council tax and stealth taxes are ruining my life as a single home owner and motorist. I am far poorer now than I ever was under a Tory government, despite higher earnings.
