If they have her on CCTV, why wouldn't they have been able to see what happened to her?

Also it is in the middle of the day, so I am surprised no-one stopped to help.

Mystery of woman left in busy road
By Bo Wilson, Evening Standard
28 September 2004

This is the moment when a woman was captured on CCTV lying unconscious in the gutter of a busy road, suffering from a serious head wound.

Police raced to the scene after traffic was forced to swerve around the 25-year-old victim as she lay bleeding.

Detectives today said they were mystified as to what happened because the unnamed woman has yet to recover sufficiently to be interviewed.

She is now in a stable condition in a south London hospital. They believe she was either attacked or run down by a car.

The woman, wearing a jacket, trousers and trainers, was discovered unconscious and bleeding profusely outside the Coca- Cola Industrial Park in Cray Road, Footscray, Sidcup at 2.15pm on Monday last week, 20 September.

Motorists drove around the woman as she lay across double yellow lines.

The CCTV images of her were taken from a number 321 bus. Police have released the picture in the hope that it will jog the memory of any witnesses and help them establish what happened. A pol ic e spokesman said: "We do not know what happened to her, which is why we need to speak to witnesses.

"She may have been hit over the head with a weapon, or she may have had her head struck against something. She may have been hit by a vehicle.

"The CCTV does not explain how she ended up lying in the road - she may have staggered into the frame."

Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen any of the events, especially drivers who passed the woman and swerved to avoid colliding with her. Anyone with information should contact Bexleyheath police station on 020 8284 9131.

The CCTV was from a bus. So it was only around her for a short time. And by the sound of it it doesn't show what happened to her.

edit:always a minute behind I am

"Motorists drove around the woman as she lay across double yellow lines."

That explains why they didn't stop to help her...they didn't want to get parking tickets.

My first reaction to this was one of shock, as to why motorists didn't stop. Inhuman I thought. But then I remembered the Tracy Edwards case. Some people don't want to get involved for fear of repercussions. Must say that I personally would have stopped, but acknowledge that there could be problems.

Probably thought she was a smackhead or something.

I probably would have stopped or at the very least stopped my car as a barricade to the traffic while the police were on their way!

Sometimes the selfishness of the human race makes me dispair!

Ah, it was on the bus, I didn't read it properly then

I would like to think I would have stopped, as has been said and at least called an ambulance, I can't believe people continued to drive round her.

Its a sorry state of affairs that people in this country won't help anyone nowadays because of fear of repercussions

Its sad isn't it. Did people ignore her due to not wanting to get involved? Fear of violence towards themselves? Fear of not knowing what to do?

I would have stopped, in same road position as you ghOst, stopping the traffic, and called ambulance and police.

Once I had caused sufficient traffic jam of at least one other car(safety in numbers) I would have then gone to the victim, with my travel rug and first aid kit to see how badly injured she was so that this could be relayed to paramedics on way.

If no traffic appeared - would still have gone to attend the woman as 999 call would have been logged and would still have remained on phone throughout under those circumstances.

Und that is from person who hates those Handy phones...

Selfishness of human race.... Appalling that people just drove past and even scarier if they did not notice her at all!

I would have stopped, being a first aider and a good all round guy.

And any traffic warden trying to give me a ticket would have found themselves sharing the gutter with this girl.

On how she got injured, I bet the bus that git her n its CCTV smacked her in the head with its side mirrors, because this has nearly happened a number of times to myself.

These bus drivers can drive so close to the kerb when pulling into a stop, so fast with their great big mirrors at head height jutting well into the pavement.Oh

Funny that, I've noticed that of late all the busses 'round these parts have aquired dayglo yellow tape on their mirrors... I wonder how many pedestrians they took out before coming up with that gem of an idea? They'll certainly be very helpful if the bus is approaching you from behind...

This sort of incident is not uncommon.

No one wants to get involved.

Not many people really care about this sort of incident or indeed about society as a whole as long as they are personally OK. When they are not, that becomes a different matter!

Sort of fits in with 'Does Society get the Policing it deserves?'

In this case it illustrates this case in point. Policing Society is down to everyone who is a member of it to some degree. Those people that just drove or walked on by without positive action are typical of the way things have gone in the society we live in.

No one is expecting members of the public to investigate the reasons why in this instance but merely protecting this woman from further damage or distress would have been in line with the principles of Policing the incident.

Indicitive of the way most people are I am sad to say unless they happen to become a victim themselves.

When you become a victim, just think about the images of this woman lying in the gutter and think to yourself, "I wonder why it appears that no one cares!!!!!"
