I know this may sound stupid, but a have never seen the vans around at night.

Is this because they can't read the number plates without light, as i thought they were infra red or something like that ??

They tend to work better at night, the reason you never see them is mainly down to the operators not wanting to work in the dark.
I think the only force to run camera vans in the dark is Essex.

Now the vans are staffed by civilian operators in our force, they won't be doing too many "unsociable hours", as the shift allowance is increased for these times.

Very late at night = more £$£$£$ in wages
Very early in morning = more £$£$£$£ in wages
Weekends = more £$£$£$£ in wages

Doesn't mean they won't be out and about at these times though...

Amazingly they use a visible flash at night (on some)

I'm sure main beam can't be too comfortable viewed through a long lens

The last advert I saw for a scamera scum was shift work to 8pm
