As a few of you may know I'm only a nipper but started a new job recently. To be honest its not what I want, a bit boring and same each day but it will do for a while. A little time ago I went to see a police recruitment officer who was hardly inviting, told me I was too young and to try again in a few years. I'm nearly 19 and would love to do something exciting, but what would be the best age to join??

Is it a decent occupation??

Would my views on speed camera's and the way speed limits are controlled be a hinderence??

Any advice would be welcome.

My e-mail address is A STATE SECRET in case anybody has any views they wouldnt like to be on a public site.

Thanks

Try it out first:

Get your mates to....
Shout abuse at you.
Spit at you.
Try and stab you.
Insult your family,
Throw up in the back of your car.
Oh yeah..
And put a cigarette out in a disrespectful manner!

Sorry SC, couldn`t resist it

Ben.. I would seriously remove your email asap. There is software available that trawls for addresses. You can be contacted via your profile page.

Ben, the bit about being too young does hold water to a certain extent, you havent got too much life experience at 19, however my Bro started with the Mets when he was 19 and a half. It cuold also be a test to ascertain whether your serious or not! Just to let you know though I have also been trying to get into the Mets and they currently have a positive discrimination drive on, so if your a White, Heterosexual Male you may find it difficult to get in. I am now in the process of starting to join up with Surrey Police whom I work for as a Civvy.

Well I'm white and straight. What about if I wear pink frilly shirts and call my interviewer sweetie darling while mentioning my foreign parents??

Just an idea.

Ben,

All i can say is, give it a go, i had always wanted to join and even though i have had all the abuse, spitting, kicking off at me, i havent regretted joining up one bit.

Your views are your views, and the end of the day as long as your not advocating a criminal act then they wont be a problem.

Just look at it this way, ive dealt with people you would never want to meet, ive seen things people dont want to see. People have threatened to kick my head in and tried but i and my colleagues have not lost yet. I also have found missing kids, stopped people being seriously injured or killed. All in all i would not change this job for anything.

Thats just my view, depends what you want out of the job really.

Any questions feel free to shout me.

Cheers mate, my girlfriend's dad is a BIB, murder squad but has started as a general bobby but never really spoke to him properly about it. Would definatly fancy it just because so many people (including me) complain about the way the country is run and the treatment of criminals etc but I would like to actually do something to change the problems rather than just complain about them.

May need to stay for a year or so in a normal job, get some "life experience" then move on to the police and see how things go. Thanks mate, may apply for some brochures, just to see the different application procuedures.

Ben.

Sounds like your already half way there mate to making the decision. And from a couple of things you said in the last post, you also have the right attitude.

Good job my wife has not read this one - she would go off on one again about U- know - what -

orange complexions and the Cornetto look ...

The BiBs in this family all joined after Uni and gap years where they back packed and did variety of odd jobs and community work so they had some wider experience of life.

But think it through - decide if it really what you want - because it is a very stressful life in reality - not as stressful as a medic's of course - especially at junior levels and in A&E - but certainly it is not an easy life - and there will be some nasty exams if you want to progress ....

as per above, I did'nt mean to sound like I was trying to put you off, give it a go, my old man has been in the job 25 years and still loves every minute of it, that one reason why I fancy giving it a go.

Ben..

Go for it....best thing I ever did...although I did start thinking about it aged 5.

Money is decent enough..especially if you live north of the Watford Gap.

No danger of being redundant, lots of scope for job variety (department moving etc)...

Pension at 50 years old....

No more having to witness people doing things wrong and feeling helpless...

oh..and the ability to drive at mega Mph legally...

You are too young, and you will realise that within 2 years.

Go enjoy life. Get drunk, party, miss going to bed as you tried the casino's on a wednesday night in the middle of winter.

Run naked on a beach. Have sex with as many rough birds as possible.

Basically live life until you think you have a good experience. Otherwise you may regret joining the plod.

Once you are in, you get tied in. It will effect your life in many ways.

Sounds negative, and it could be. Its youre choice. But it could be the best one youve made today

My dad was in the force for about 30 years, retired recently. He had a good career, and was in a relatively lofty position on retirement.

He told me to not even think about becoming a copper. His view was that it was no longer the same job, frustrating, and everyone hates you (paraphrasing a bit, but you get the idea). Too much political interference was the main reason for this, as he saw it.

I enjoy it.
If you like a varied job and have a decent sense of humour then don't muck about, get the application in.
If you would like to contact me off forum feel free.

Mike.
