Just something that's been bothering me for a while.
I've just noticed that I'm guilty of it myself, actually, when posting in this forum...
The term "Speeder" as a noun seems to be slipping into everyday useage (especially BBC news reports, I find).
Seems like its being forced into the English language and (alphabetic considerations aside) is to sit there next to "Paedophile", "Murderer" etc.
Case in point was the article about the chap with his home made scamera. The piece started along the lines of "...he is annoyed at the Speeders who drive past his house..."
Why couldn't it be "drivers, possibly exceeding the speed limit"?
No. You are A Speeder and as such should be taken from this place to be hanged by the neck until dead...

That's my feeling too, and exactly why I think its ridiculous. If "speed kills" were true and as simple as that, then fair enough.
However, its not true and its not simple.
Can we persuade the government to embark on a "Being a complete tw4t kills" campaign? No - that would need expensive staff to police it.
Street, I hope you're being toungue-in-cheek whenever you slip a "speed kills" into your posts, but I have a slight sinking feeling that you're not.
Speed doesn't kill (or else we'd all be dead by now) - stopping abruptly does.

Ah, in the same way that someone who commits theft is a thief?... Except they're not, they're a victim of society.

Perzactly. And probably need a nice little foreign holiday and a ton of handouts to make them feel better about themselves. Before mugging an old granny for her pension.

Hi Pete,
I am as guilty as anyone of using this term, mainly because I have been involved in the whole speeding thing for so long and it's the term that Trafpol use when discussing speeding cases.
All it describes of course is someone who is exceeding the speed limit, it doesn't mean that their speed is incorrect or inappropriate.
We all know speed doesn't kill; I came back from Jamaica in a new generation Boeing 777 with airspeed indicators mounted to the bulkheads, and I sat there at 35000ft having a wee dram at 610 knots in absolute safety, or as safe as you can be in an aircraft.
I didn't explode, self-destruct or have my blood boil in my veins, and I'm here hale and hearty to prove it.
What OUR task is now, is to make the current speeding policies and the whole ineffectual, incongruous approach to them by the Government as socially unacceptable as drunk driving!
Whenever I write to an MP or newspaper I NEVER use the word "speeding". I say "exceeding the speed limit". Speeding is far too emotive a word for something that occurs largely harmlessly millions of times a day.
Even the ABD and people on here use the term speeding which is a shame - I think it should be reserved for excessive, dangerous or inappropriate speed.
