I am a Special in Essex and due to the events of the past week there was support call last night to provide reassurance. I got called to an incident, concern for welfare, and I managed to fall over on the embankment of a dual carriageway, old piece of fence in the tall grass wet and covered in moss, it was also pitch black. Anyway, I snapped my fibula. I didn’t realise for a while and after 2 hours of walking about I went to A&E to be diagnosed.

The point of this is; Essex have been great about this whole thing. Totally supportive asking if I need anything, assistance or lifts, even getting shopping. They are probably worried I am going to prosecute them and its all a front but I hope its genuine.

My personal life has been impacted, big weekend planned with a bit of flying and meeting friends and I am off to Vegas a week today. After this week, it all gets put in to perspective.

Really impressed, I wish more commercial businesses had this sort of support.

Pointless post over. Sorry

Was it just a crack or a greenstick fracture?
Because if it was a proper manly break you'd have a hard time walking on it.

I didn't get a picture of the x ray, but I will. It was like a lightning bolt fracture about 1in above my ankle. The doc was puzzeled how I was walking on it. I was limping to be fair, but still putting weight on it.

fibula fractures can be weight bearing ( it's the little bone of the pair in the lower leg for those who A+P is ropey)

OP - ouch !

in terms of the mindset towards injuries sustained at work , the ES have a slightly less panic stricken response than many other organisations - in 'safe' organisations the chance of a HSE visit and letters from the NWNF merchants stresses managers out.

It's not a pointless post. It's good to hear that a police force is looking out for their volunteers.

It's care and consideration like that that makes it obvious and eyebrow raising when support like that doesn't happen.

It reads like some people within Essex Police have made a difference. Shouldn't they get some acknowledgement and recognition? smile

You've just told it how it is. That's a core function of the police.

I've been fortunate never to have had a big break. I've always managed to fall off motorcycles without getting any serious injuries. When I was a lad another lad my age fell out of a tree collecting Conkers. I can't remember the combination of limbs, but he broke three of them. I wish you a speedy recovery.

Well done Essex police. Who has offered these things ? ie have these offers of support come from local level or have these offers come from HR (or "People" as I believe is the current politically correct name for what was "personnel").

My advice - make the most of these offers if it helps you. It probably won't last.

I've seen stuff myself that counters that assumption barryrs.

I am not sure I am comfortable when Red 4 and I agree on things, it's unsettling a bit like when the Vonbot is in reasonable, sensible mode and gives credence to doubts that more than one person uses that login.

It could be some people within Essex Police doing the right thing, using that rapier on their pretty crest to cut through some of the politics and BS.

People buy people.

barryrs, I'd not seen that link. I assumed it was about the officer tripping over the car wash bay kerb in Thetford.

I thought he may have been doing the F1 driver watch commercial or he'd put on a new shirt that was a bit stiff but now I am wondering if he's nursing an £8K Flea bite.

Isn't the whole point that if you suffer an injury at work, then you should be supported, in order to get you back to work asap.

Where it goes wrong is when you instruct solicitors to pursue an injury claim for compensation. If I think I might get sued if I call the police to a crime thats ongoing, and that there might be some liability on my part, then if I think I would be better off not calling the police and allowing the crime to continue, thats madness. To be more scared of the police than the criminals, if you are law abiding and not a personal injury expert is a terrible way to be. It puts doubt and uncertainty if I as the owner of say a empty property being broken into, have to worry than when plod arrives in his or her size 9's, that they may trip over a kerb and I'll be £20k out of pocket!

Constabularies do seem to get competitive, witness the fall out over the 'You've met the Met' stickers, so it could be seen that Essex surpass other forces when it comes to looking after their Specials?
