Wife in Labour
Discussion
A question mainly for the BiB although others may have experienced it.
My wife is expecting our first child and it is due soon (ie the weekend). On Saturday she had some contractions, and by about 5.30 had decided she ought to go to the local birthing centre to be checked. The birthing centre is staffed by midwives (of whom she is one) and therefore can only deal with natural deliveries. If mother or baby needs medical attention you need to go to the one of the obstetric units. There is a choice of these but all some way away.
In the birthing centre the midwive does the checks they do on mothers to be, including n examination. After the examination checks the babies heartbeat and tells us that we need to go to the obstectric unit to have the baby monitored, and possible emergency ceasarean.
Ambulance is offered, but I have to drive anyway as we need the transport to get back, and if wife is kept in I still need the car to get back. Also of course no idea how long the wait for an ambulance will be.
Result is of course a drive of 20 miles or so to the local obstectric unit in the knowledge that wife is worried about her unborn child. Therefore speed were in excess of my normal speed and possibly in excess of speed limits
Had I been stopped what would the likely reaction of the BiB been? Would it have varied according to the speed, or would I have been ok as long as driving was seen to be fast but not dangerous?
I was careful to adhere to limit passing the one speed camera but would it have been a mitigating factor?
Oh and would the fact that contractions stopped as soon as we got to the obstectric unit and monitoring showed mother and baby were fine have made any difference, as no baby produced (yet!) to show the cause of the emergency?

Chris, I would have listened and acted in a sympathetic way.
Not even Michael schumacher could have caught me on route to the labour ward when Mrs silverback was about to give birth.
I have even had a pregnant mum in the car with partner with everything blaring to get her there
(whilst crossing fingers she didnt give birth in the car)
Hope all goes well.
Mike.

Surely your better with a paramedic unit. Most of the equipment and experience if anything did go wrong on that drive.
Absolutely right. But sometimes they may take a while to arrive due to commitments.
I asked if they would like to come with me, in they jumped off we went.
Probably got to hospital driving swiftly but smoothly in just over 5 mins. The ambulance would have been miles off so it was a case of in you get off we go.
Obviously this is one particular case that I felt was fine to do that with. Every situation is different. This one ended up ok.
Good luck to all those about to give birth. Something magical about seeing your kids born.
Now this is what is bugging me - if - by remote chance - I get pinged by Steve's talivan flooring it to get Wildy to hospital - which could really be any time in next 6/7 weeks or so - would I be able to plead "mitigating" circumstances to zealot in the van?
Am inclined to stop and make them deliver for a change
But I think Wildy would divorce me over that
On the other hand - she could hit them, hold their scamera operating hand whilst in a contraction and nearly break their fingers and shout
bar steward or similar - which is what I got last time

Agreed - helped deliver other people's children during training - and it was a rewarding experience...
But your own .... been with Wildy (for better and worse) for each birth. Pure magic to see each of my children appear - you really cannot describe that feeling - can you! Looking forward to the fifth one now ... Novemebr 22nd is the official day - but babies appear when they are good and ready ..... we are on stand-by more or less.....
At least I know what to do ..... if "push comes to pant"

Policeman would have helped you (probably), Scamera would do you ; they have done people carrying transplant organs.....

Unlike a policeman who can see that it is an emergency a camera has no reason, no sense, no opinion, no care nor any feelings so it'll take a snap of you and you'd get the bill everytime.

Correct there autismuk. Shame, but you are right.
Mog - 5 kids, damn good effort. Hope all is well, and you are enjoying the countdown.
Yes, best wishes from me too. Let us all know when it's time to leave our keyboards and start pacing up and down the office.
Best wishes all - whether pregnant or not,
Dave.
