A ‘power-mad’ traffic warden has been jailed after he lied to police about being run over by a motorist he had penalised because the power of his job “went to his head”.

Karl Crompton, 43, fabricated an allegation that he was mowed down by a disgruntled driver.

He accused Edward Phipps, 63, of ploughing into him after an angry confrontation outside a pub in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, on Oct 9, 2011.

Crompton accused Mr Phipps of driving into his knees causing him to roll across the bonnet after he gave him a ticket for parking in a disabled space.

But CCTV obtained from the Jewel of the Severn pub by police proved that no such incident had occurred.

Following a four-day trial last month Crompton was found guilty of intending to pervert the course of justice, and yesterday he was jailed for four months at Shrewsbury Crown Court.

During the trial Robert Edwards, prosecuting, told the court the traffic warden told police a “number of lies” following the fabricated incident. Addressing Crompton he said: “Mr Phipps said a few words to you, so as revenge you lied to the police that he ran you over.

“The power of being a traffic warden had gone to your head.”

During the trial Crompton claimed must have been hit during a two-second gap in the CCTV footage.

The footage showed Mr Phipps driving off after receiving a parking fine and missing Crompton, who was standing next to his car, by at least 2ft. In the 12-second clip, Crompton watches the car drive away before he comically slumps to the floor and grabs his leg feigning injury.

After the case, Paul McGreary, group manager of public protection and enforcement at Shropshire council, said: “As unfortunate as this was, it does highlight the pressures that civil enforcement officers can be under while they carry out their duties. However, saying that this was a very unusual situation and we are confident it was an isolated case.”

Sounds like Mr McGreary is a knob too.

Only 4 months for a NG PCJ by a public servant putting an innocent member of the public at risk of being put through the CJS. Seems lenient to me.

The pressure to lie, cheat and pervert the course of justice? Strange...

Be truly ashamed of yourself Mcgreary, weaselly excuse, non condemnation of a criminal in your employment, that brings your management credentials into question I'm CONFIDENT that's an accurate assessment of you.rage

As for that vile criminal excuse of a Warden far too lenient sentence considering the implications if that motorist had been wrongly convicted.furious

The car does appear to be driven at the warden. He appears to be pushed out of the way.

People in a supposed position of authority getting drunk on their powers?

That never happens does it?

Is that how some of them seem to forget their own Professional Standards policies when they deal with colleagues?

This 'syndrome' just doesn't only effect Traffic Wardens.

CCTV proved it didn't happen? But then the police said no CCTV covered the area of London that Tomlinson got barged over in. Good job there was BBC TV coverage of what went on at Hillsborough. And they still tried to rewrite history.

From a bottle half full perspective at least he was only a Traffic Warden and not a Police Constable or MP or Cabinet Minister.

'He ran my foot over' versus 'No, Saddam really has Nukes'?

At least the Traffic Warden didn't use Depleted Uranium in his lie.

Crown Court can easily get bogged down by legal debate for a long time.

It's a facet of human behaviour that isn't exclusive to people who work in the public sector. Every organisation will have people in positions of power and authority that will 'get drunk on their power'.

The video is even more clear than the stills, the car was nowhere near the Warden and was certainly not driven at him

We should be happy it was dealt with properly and not swept under a rug. smile

Small acorns.....etc.

Perhaps there needs to be an annual award for not covering wrong doing up, though we may need to exempt the NHS for the first five years given their recent form.

'The Great British Truth Award 2014 presented by Adele....

Because as William Hague said, if you've done nothing wrong....

It does look like the driver was being a bit aggressive in moving forward whilst the pillock was stood in front of it, but it's blatantly obvious that he wasn't hit.
