Do people know what to do in a crash?
Discussion
This morning, whilst walking the dog; came across a Renault Clio with no front, and a Rover 400 with a dented side.
The Clio had not stopped at a roundabout and had T boned the Rover.
Asked if everyone was ok and checked noone was injured (everyone fine but shaken). They weren't as it was probably a sub 10mph "ding". No airbags etc had been deployed.
They then left the 2 damaged cars blocking one lane of 2 on the roundabout, not a good move at the start of rush hour
The bloke who had been hit on the side was going on about calling the police. I asked if they both had swapped details (yes), taxed, road legal and insured etc (yes), if they had a camera (yes), told them to take pictures of the cars, junctions etc, report it to the cop shop within 24 hours and call their insurance companies (they get paid lots of £££ to sort it)
BTW shortly afterwards, the police on passed on the other side, but seeing no one injured didn't bother to stop.
IMHO there should be something you keep in the car with a "to do" list as they were both sitting in their cars not knowing "what to do next".

It never hurts for a passing MOP to check if all are okay and suggest the best course of action.
That's what I did (having been in 2 crashes previously). The insurance companies are paid lots of money to sort it all out, so as long as no one is injured, let them take the strain and hassle.

Problem is after an accident you are usually shaken up, disorientated and not thinking straight.
Yeah. Reminds me of a story an old workmate of mine used to tell.
He'd managed to literally wrap his Capri around a tree. The driver's door is gone, and he's not seriously hurt - a few cuts and bruises. Having spent a minute or two extracting himself from the wreck, he noticed that the interior light was on.
He then considered it really important to crawl back into the wreck to "turn off the interior light and save the battery".
You're not reading this are you Peter? I haven't spoken to you for 20 years!
Renault do an absolutely fantastic job with things like this, with my new Clio I got a leather bound folder which included:
- Pen
- Torch
- Disposable camera
- Notebook with headings such as
etails... Space for a diagram.... Registrations
- Large sheet with bulletpoints for what to do in the case of an accident.
All in my glovebox.

Alas am learning the hard way on this one. A guy comes around a corner in the housing estate. He cuts the corner sees me and tries to swerve back into his own lane and we clip headlights. No damage to my 1992 polo that 35 quid worth of bits from the breaker and some hammering hasnt sorted. His car being a poncy modern RV4 thing meant sprinkled plexiglass, bodywork and coolant everywhere meant hes in for a big bill.
He says its 50/50, but as we were holding traffic up we pulled the cars to the side, exchanged details and that was that..so I thought.. I inform my insurance about the incident but cant be arsed about claiming as the car woyuld be written off (400£ airport hack, not the Cobra phew..) Next day Tescos call me informing me that he wants to claim on me as he said I was coming from a sideroad..(ermm? my driveway was on his side of the road and I had reversed out of it earlier)
I hate people now. lying scum. Considering he was in my lane, offside headlight vs offside headlight and my photos of the Debris field/coolant puddle from his car(albeit both cars have moved to the side of the road) Tescos will hopefully tell him to drop the fraudulant claim.
Moral of story, take photos and trust NO ONE

When you go abroad you get one of those accident forms to fill in if you have a prang, maybe UK insurers should issue them here and folks should keep them in the car. Sections for all parties to write down name and address, insurers details, brief description of incident, time and place etc. It is carboned, everyone gets a copy with all the same relevant info.
Very simple, maybe too simple. We prefer to write down snippets of information on torn off bits of waste paper whilst forgetting to get important relevant details.

when younger i was getting a lift from me mums to me mates house. We were turning right just before a tight bend when some prat going far to fast actuallty T-boned us when we were in the side road because he was going to fast to make the bend!! Mum was in a right state so i sorted it with no idea what i was doing abd he drove off.
Dad arrived later and after investigation (he went round to see the bloke for a `chat`) he found out he was an off duty copper and was p
ed as a fart. His car was absolutely wrecked and shouldn`t have been driven but he knew what he was doing. Magistrate then believed him after mum contested as he repeatedly lied thorugh his teeth (he first said i was driving and mum was my girlfriend!!!).
So i can agree with the don`t trust anyone and having pointers for people who are unsure what to do is an excellent idea.
