What is the law regarding speed traps

I though that all police cars / vans now had to be clearly marked now in regards to tracking you for speed.

When I was caught it was an unmarked car on a bridge overlooking the M2 - the two cops were inside the car - and I think it was a laser that clocked my speed - red digital read out at the back showing the speed I was doing - but it was not on a tripod - and I am not sure if the car window was open or closed when the officer used the laser on me.

Was I clocked legally??
