I recently bought my first sports car. In 16 years of driving I've always owned nice but boring cars, now I have a 151mph coupe 
Anyway, I got a bit carried away in the first week and ended up doing 140mph down a long straight A-road in Norfolk. I only did it for about 5 seconds (although it probably took 15-20 seconds to get from 60 to that speed), and only to see 'what it was like'.
I didn't see any speed traps. No fixed cameras, no mobile cameras, no police cars, but for the last 2 weeks I've been worrying about the chance that some sneaky copper was hiding in a bush with a gun. I'm basically being paranoid.
Whats the normal procedure with these things? I have a totally clean license, the only time I had points on it was to take 3 points for an SP30 for a mate who would otherwise have been banned, that was years ago. That NIP arrived from a GATSO camera within a few days.
Its over 14 days now since my little flirt with speed, but do the laser gun cops drive after you and stop you? Or do they click-click-click each driver and send the NIPs out later?
Tell you what, its the last time I drive that fast :/

if the car wasnt in your name at the dvla then you may have a bit longer to wait until your 'in the clear'.......about 6 months iirc.
if you were caught at that sort of speed though i would have thought that you would have either been stopped a bit further up the road or had a cop already round your house.
dont bother getting paranoid mate,it aint worth it......just arm yourself with a good detector set-up (and possibly a 'garage door opener') and 'keep em peeled' as shaw taylor used to say.

You may have given a thumbs down to the cameras but your worry and reluctance to repeat your stupdity is a testimony to the safety camera policy, it is exactly what they are set up to do. Stop drivers behaving in such a stupid, dangerous and prattish way.
The following advice, get a detector etc, is also a testimony to the idiots who think that this sort of high speed stupidity and ignorance should be allowed.
Well done for reforming and keeping to speeds below that which provide a risk to other road users and less importantly to your driving licence.

As to the specifics here, when displaying gullibility of such prodigious proportions it's unwise to question the intelligence of folk who have a brain and are willing to use it when driving. I imagine you stop and wait for instructions when you haven't seen a speed limit repeater for a mile or so?

FYI, I'm quite a normal driver. I consider myself unusual in that in 30mph zones, I generally stick to 33-34mph. My speedo overreads by 3mph (I have satnav so know this), so my speed is quite respectable.
However, on motorways, I drive at about 85mph. I don't hog the middle lane, I ALWAYS indicate when changing lanes, etc.
On the occasion I was speeding, it was curiosity to see what 140mph felt like. Considering the road was completely straight, with forest on either side, and no oncoming traffic (its not worth risking), I think on the whole I wasn't really a risk to anybody.
The real danger on the roads are those people who seem to have little or no road sense. You see them every day. They're the ones who can't keep lane discipline on roundabouts. The ones who brake in the middle of a bend. The ones who tailgate on the motorway. And most especially, the complete idiots who don't know how to drive in adverse weather conditions.
I'm just being mega paranoid, I checked the Norfolk website, that road is monitored by mobile cameras, but not on the day I was speeding. Its a good long 50 mile stretch of road that I was speeding for around 2 miles or so, early in the morning. Its just that I've never had a car this fast before, and am getting nervous about the irony if I was caught.
FYI, I think speed cameras are there to collect money. They do little or nothing to improve road safety. The statistics over the last 10 years or so are testiment to that fact.

Well I don't want to be too judgemental, but I would advise a slightly more cautious approach to trying speeds in the 140 mph range for the first time.
On acquiring a car that's much faster than anything I had previously owned, I would try a short spell at 100, and repeat that a few times. Next suitable day I would go a little faster, and repeat that a few times, steadily building up to higher speeds for longer periods subject to feeling safe and comfortable with it.
Some may consider that unnecessarily cautious, but I would do that and get used to the feel of higher speeds in a steady and progressive manner, rather than rush straight out to see what it will do.
Enjoy your driving, but keep it safe - and then, all being well, you can keep doing it.

Watch out for the next medical, they might do a charisma bypass although as I have no experience of this I can't comment further... Also, regarding the first posters admission to driving at a somewhat more conservative speed elsewhere, who says its safe to do 30 in a 30 zone? It might be safer to do 50 or 20 or 10, it all depends on local conditions, not what some faded roadsign put up by a councillor "thinks" it ought to be.

Yes, of course those are possible hazards, but with a properly maintained and well shod vehicle the risk is tiny. Problems with stray animals are also very rare I would suggest, so I think your two examples are sufficiently rare to be disregarded.
Are we saying that one should forego the enjoyment of highish speed for an entire motoring career in case one is confronted by that type of problem?
I think we should bear in mind that nothing can ever be 100% safe, so all we can do is to minimise the risk to the extent of learning how to cope with the more common range of hazards. That is where the major risk for most drivers is to be found.
