Today I encountered another dual-carriageway outside lane hogger. He stayed there, at 60 mph, for all of two miles between roundabouts. He had exited the first in the outer lane, stayed there, and then went "straight across" the second roundabout ie did NOT even take the third exit.

There was very little traffic and I had obviously wanted to overtake - even more "obvious" when eventually I flashed the headlight and then "accidentally" left it on main beam (it was during daylight hours). But to no avail, he stayed there until the second roundabout.

On my return journey on the same dual-carriageway I encountered another outside lane hogger running at 60 mph for over a mile from where she needed to make a lane choice. So I CAREFULLY drifted past in the nearside lane.

Had it been dark I would not have tried either of these tactics - had these drivers been considerate I wouldn't have had to! I always feel bad about the impasse that is created by people driving like this. It is easy to get angry but not a good idea - especially when on two wheels!

Anyone got any "better" approach which allows progression in these circumstances? Or suggest a view that can help de-fuse the aggressive reaction that is stimulated by drivers like these?

Are you sure you don't mean 70 Pwig?

You don't get many outside lane hoggers on airfields.

I have the same problem between the roundabouts on the A61 on the approach to work .. if you flash them they get annoyed 'cos of course they don't know they're doing anything wrong.

I give them a few seconds to decide if they're staying in that lane or going to pull over to the left lane, if they stay put I just undertake.

if ever I'm pulled over for it I'll just explain to the officer why i did what i did and hope they see it the same way. Inconsiderate road users really p*ss me off..

I'm with pwig and joospeed. Once you are certain they are just being MLMs pass 'em on the left. Its not an offence, amazingly, although could be taken into account if there is a prang as its not Highway Code advice.

There again its in the Highway Code to use the left lane unless overtaking...

Whatever you do, though, do it carefully. Plenty of observation and be prepared to abandon the manoeuvre if the MLM swerves. (Often they do...ferk knows why...)

As the BiB like to remind us they can't choose which law to uphold and have to uphold all of them.

No law againist undertaking but there is againist "Driving without reasonable consideration for other road users" - should cover lane hogging nicely. I'm sure our courts are full drivers being done for this.

Just had an extreme version of this today.

Heading north up the A74(M) in the Freelander. Traffic very light, so I'm mainly in lane 1, with occasional moves into lane 2 to pass a lorry or slower car.

In the rear view mirror I can see a grey Corolla (or similar) in the outside lane (lane 3), slowly getting nearer, with nothing in the lanes inside it. It continues up to, and then past me, but still in the outside lane. Stays there, within 50m ahead of me, over the next 5 miles or so. I can see another fast (100ish) car approaching it from well back, but I'm in lane 2 passing a lorry.

Grey Corolla moved over sharply, about 10m in front of me, and slows to 60, with a Freelander almost rectally inserted. Once in the clear, with 3 lanes to choose in front of him to move out the way, guess what? Indicates right, and moves back out into lane 3, still doing 65.

Me, lane 1, past, and good riddance. He was still there in the outside lane 10 miles on...

I wouldn't even call it bad lane discipline, this was just loopy driving.

Oh, and this procedure also went under the statutory A74(M) safety camera van parked on the bridge around Lockerbie as usual. Didn't do much for the safety of that driver, did it.

It always amazes me what must go through some people's minds while driving. While in the nearside lane and making progress in an empty road with a sole car in front of me in lane 2, for no apparant reason, indicate right and sit in the outside lane. Just makes no sense.

Had a women sitting quite happily at 40 in a 50 in the outside today, wasn't in the mood to flash or get close so "safely" undertook her, moved back in and gave her a nice flash of the hazards to thank her for being a silly mare, thankfully, she took the hint and moved over.

the worst ones for o/s/l'ing on the a127 are either the nurses and doctors from southend hospital who all pull on to the 127 at wherever they join, get into the outside lane and just sit there like total knobends.....even if the turning they are going to use is 8 miles or so further on (the right hand filter just before the tesco's roundabout) or its the a130 brigade who join the 127 and do the exact same thing until they get about 100ft from the lights at progress road and decide they want to carve up anyone on their inside (who are actually passing them)and turn left.

with absolutely no trafpol from chelmsford about they know they are safe to hold everyone else up....they are total dogs cocks!

Woman do it here on our ring roads. I think they are positioning themselves early for a right turn at the next roundbout, bless. Tw*ts do it as well. Since the adoption of specs these people have really clogged things up, often crawling along at 35 mph (speedo) reading!!

I firmly believe that some drivers think that the lanes have their own speed limits and that 50/60/70 equates to lane 1/2/3

Why else would they pull onto empty carriageways and then jump into lane 2 or 3?
