On Saturday I was "making progress" along the M1 (that's what I call the private road in my back garden I mean. Traffic was light and visibility was good by the way) in convoy with a nice friendly 911 (very helpful to have as people seem to move out of the way of a "flash" car more than they do mine) when we spotted a police car in the inside lane and braked heavily rather sharpish, both of us passing the police car at around 90ish... I pulled into the middle lane and so did the porsche a few cars ahead of me... The police volvo sped up and followed me for a bit and then went to have a look at the porsche for a bit before going back to the inside lane and slowing down. I feel that I've been quite lucky to get away with this one...
So my question is: What do you traffic police do with people who are interpreting the speed limit on quiet motorways somewhat liberally? If they aren't driving like a twat how do you treat them? I suppose it is dependant on situation. How fast would someone have to be going on a quiet motorway in good weather before you thought "right, he's mine"?

oh yeah... do those speed cameras on the M25 after you join it from the M1 and up to about heathrow actually work? Everyone seemed to ignore them...

Regarding the M25 speed cameras in the variable limit(M40 to A3) I don't think I've ever seen them flash, even when people go through them at 90+ (when the limit is 70). Madness having them on motorways, panic braking when people are often travelling too close = pileups.
There was 5(?) car pileup on the Blackwall Tunnel Southern Approach yesterday pm (Sat) - willing to bet it was caused by greasy roads + people travelling too close + panic braking for speed camera. Safety camera my arse
Of course, the roadworks cameras are armed and dangerous.

Interpreting, that's a good one. Sorry officer I was only making an interpretation of the 70 limit and I interpreted it at 95.

I suspect the pair of you got away with it because you weren't followed at high speed on video...
So once the BiBs had had a look and made sure you weren't speeding after they might as well let you go.
Of course...you also slowed down on seeing the car rather than piling on by at high speed...could be you got off so lightly as at least you were being polite and not taking the piss.

No they don't think it's a problem, look at the number of senior BIB caught for exceeding the 70 limit - they clearly think it's OK, which of course 95% of times it is.
Many years ago, in an orange MGBGT, I came up behind a white Jaguar at about 90 mph. He was doing slightly less.
I flashed him after a while and he moved over to let me past.
As I overtook him, I looked across and it was a BiB.
It was a stupid thing to do but there were then no markings on the car and I think that my face must have said it all.
He simply laughed at me and waved me on!

if you were travelling in control at speed, then surely you should be aware of a police car and be able to slow better than that? ie, not sharply, and below 90?
the way you have written it suggests that the speed in use was inapropriate as visibilty did not match stopping/slowing distances.
Im not against speeding, but you still need to be at a speed where you are able to cope with the surroundings.
Im probably paranoid of speed after several experiences of coming round a perfectly good bend to find the most un expected things.
I stick the rule; if I cant stop in the distance I can see, im going too fast.
eg, round a bend of a 60mph country lane, woman changing tyre.
another sweeper - no warnings posted, temporary traffic lights for roadworks with 20 car queue..
over a brow and bend on the M5, visible distance is reduced 200 feet only for a short period, right on the brow, a caravan spread across 3 lanes caught by high winds.
99% of the time you get away with these things. its the 1% you have to prepare for.

Exactly! That's what many people on this site have been saying for a long time.
It's not the blanket speed limit that counts, it's the speed according to the circumstances.
Signs indicating hazards that my not be immediately apparant, like "sharp bend ahead" (with an indication as to which way the bend goes), or "blind crest ahead" or "hidden turning" and so on.
All these are an aid, as is a driver's observation skills (is this taught in driving lessons?) - not a blanket speed limit.
Good post Stooz, I accept all your points. The bit of motorway in question was completely straight and I could see for a considerable distance ahead of me. However I'm sure you can see that is is possible for a vehicle in the inside lane to be obscured by a vehicle in the middle lane... and if everyone is travelling at the right (not legal, as in "right to create this situation") the vehicle in the inside lane can remain obscured. That is what happened on this occaision. The reason I went past the chap at about 90 was that I thought it'd be better to slow down more gradually once infront of the policemen rather than still being hard on the brakes at high speed when you go past them...
In the USA you can be done for speeding by braking sharply, even from the opposite side of the road as i was done recently in Dallas...
The sharp dip of the bonnet would imply that you were speeding.
Another friend was done in a pack of speeders as she was the only one to drop from the pack when the police pulled our behind them !!

sounds a bit like my journey tonker - 275 miles from York to Sussex. Does your car include stationary periods in the average speed then? I assume from the 88 mph average it doesn't. On my journey the car said avg 33mph... most of it (260ish miles) was on motorway and most of that (excepting m25 roadworks) was in excess in of 70...

Oh yes I have seen them flash loads of times. I always drive within the limit but have often wondered why some people seem to be quite happy to cruise through them at 10+ MPH over the limit. Assumed they have some sort of camera detector and that not all the cameras are armed. Not going to chance it myself!

Today...I was parked on a slip road watching the painted marks on the motorway below, timing vehicles as they passed between...
Only those doing 92mph and above were stopped....So that would suggest that 91mph wouldn't be stopped...
It also depends on whether they are tailgaiting, what lane discipline they have etc etc

I've heard that some TrafPol's make additional allowance if the target vehicle spots the car on the slip road (i.e. slight dab on brakes or safe lane change) - What do you think?
