Lots and lots of Trafpol

I work around the Chigwell (Essex area) and in the last week have seen numerous amounts of Traffic police in brand new Black liveried up Volvo's. Popped down to get a sandwich in my car (was a rush) and on the high street were lots of blue cones with big POLICE SLOW signs. Turned out to be a checkpoint of some type, they pulled over the X5 in front of me but the nice man waved me past. The next day while staring aimlessly out of the show room windows I saw 4 identical Volvo's drive by in convoy..... I presume going or returning from another checkpoint and today there was one poking his nose out of a layby awaiting speeders I presume.

So.... they do exist.

Would the checkpoint just be a random stop?
