Mind wandering while driving down the A44 this afternoon. How far below NSL can be legally regarded as "Slow".

Whoever named it the A44, wont like you posting it on PH...

Have you asked his/her permission?

Quite!

Personal opinion only and not sure the context in which you ask the question. As I say personally I'd reckon anything unable to maintain consistently more than 20 mph as "SLOW." Stab in the dark I'm afraid and hopefully more helpful than that of Mr Troll.

By the way not too seriously towman but...."mind wandering..."

Yes Steve, that's what I thought you meant.

When they say SLOW I sometimes wonder whether they mean drive at a low speed (in which case how slow is that?) or do they mean slow down, in which case I am again left to wonder what speed they have in mind. It all seems a bit vague really.

I don't know if anybody actually finds such signs helpful but I don't, and for my own purposes I would dispense with them. Maybe they are felt to be of help by relatively new drivers.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

My driving intstructor used to hate these signs. I take them as "Hazard, drive slower below the speed that would dictate the safe driving speed of the condtions (below the speed limit of course )"

Served me well so far

And what about the 'Slow down' signs - How do they know how fast I'm going in the first place?

I take those signs to mean

'Hazard Ahead - Drive with caution'

I don't necessarily drive any slower, but always cover the brake and increase my level of alertness

They can also give a very good indication of what the road is about to do, if the 'SLOW' is written before a bend, 9/10 the bend will tighten or there will be a series of bends.

If they are before a summit in the road the likelyhood is the road will turn very soon after the summit which could catch you unaware.

I agree the sign is very very vague, but useful too

Happens to us all, I managed to get my truck wedged today, strangest thing I have ever done.

Discovered that Diesel can be REALLY useful in that situation.

There's a sign I pass on my way to work saying: "Duck Eggs". Now I've been very carefull when passing, and have to report that I've NEVER been hit by one yet!

S.L.O.W. is an anagram for something - so I was told once but cannot remember what it stands for....but admit it was in a pub quiz and it was a smarty pants driving instructor who said it. Think my offereing was "Sleazy Lady Over the Way" ....

But ... you SLOW usuaully appears at a bend, series of bends or where there is a concealed exit - like a farm, public footpath or dirt track....

By the way - we have another line on COAST as well.

C.A.R.P.! (and if you do not CARP - then as always "a rope ends it!"

Und that ist little competition..... .what is the anagram? .. und nein - Liebchen my brainies are not still in delivery room. Speaking of baby ... she is snoozing - which ist why I am on here.... for a bit of light entertainment!

Warning signs indicating some form of hazard ahead (like "hidden turning", sharp bend arrows etc) are a hell of a lot better than a revenue camera, van or BIB laser trap.

I passed about a dozen of these signs and slowed at each one. By the time I passed the last one I was doing 5mph. Why are there no signs to say "Speed Up", "Nail it along this bit", "Drive it like you stole it" etc etc etc

What about the "congealed entrance" signs? no entry I suppose. Or those "Heavy Plant Crossing" signs, visions of migrating Triffids
