Depends if you want to hire a car again in europe.

I hire of hertz and National frequently, they share all information with other hire companies, if you don't pay, then you'll struggle to hire again.

Then there is the whole italy issue, as they will not pay for you, so you may always have to be worried about entering italy again.

Was it a parking ticket or a speeding fine?

Did you pay by credit card? If so, and you ignore it, and it was valid, then won't they just deduct from the card anyway?

Maybe it's in Italian and the OP doesn't know!

I once got a parking ticket in Germany when driving a hired vehicle. That was nigh on 20 years ago now and they haven't caught up with me yet...

Sorry it was a speeding ticket. The notice was in Italian

The hire company forwarded on the notice but no instructions on payment, only a 50 euro charge plus VAT for forwarding on to me

I have a parking violation in Oz and have bee back a couple of times with no issues.

My thought process is - if they can't tell you how to pay........

Guide to Pistonheads - half the threads are about Johnny Foreigner coming over here and breaking our laws. The other half are about how to ignore speeding fines incurred in Foreignland.

Perhaps check your credit card statement, the hire company may have debited the amount from your card and paid the fine already.

I always thought it was half about how to avoid paying a parking fine and the other half about how to stop people parking where you don't want them too...biggrin

Google seems to be your friend on how to pay this.

I would take the time and trouble to read upon it if you like being able to hire a car without wondering everytime you step off the 'plane if there could be an issue or not.

I got an Italian speeding fine. The process (apart from the amount) was entirely painless.

First the hire company notified me, and charged something like €20. I waited, and received the letter from the Italian police. It was in English, with full instructions on how to pay - which basically meant doing an online bank transfer and carefully applying the right reference number so that they know who's paying.

OP: If the letter you've received has come from the hire firm and genuinely contains no information on payment, then I'd wait to receive the official letter from the police.

€185 is a lot for being only 20kph over, but hey - I'll be more careful next time. It just goes to show how lucky we are in this country with our comparatively lax speed enforcement and brightly coloured GATSOs.

Those are the other two halves.

As said before always swap out your bank and credit cards on a regular basis.
Once its been replaced they cannot add charges to your account without asking you
as the card will flag up invalid.

If the card was valid at the time you signed the hire agreement , agreeing to be liable for any penalties gathered during the hire period , then charges can be applied to the card , even if it has subsequently been cancelled - the card company will then chase you for the debt .
