Around a year ago i got a speeding ticket from a fixed Camera outside Monaco on the french side. I got done on the way into Monaco and again on the way out. The police tracked me down as it was a hire car and sent me a french letter telling me i'd been a bad boy and broke their speed limit. I ignored it and changed my credit card so they could not automatically fine me (i know how sneeky they can be). So, today a year later i've ended up with two more 'reminders' again in French an the fine has gone up.

My question is can i get away with this or are they going to catch up with me eventually? I planned on ignoring it seeing as i don't live in that country and what ever they do won't affect me over here.

Help or advice is appreciated-i know i should have paid it but i figured if i ignored it they would give up as i lived in the UK!
Thanks

How much were the fines?

Surely should have just paid them rather than faffing around changing cards then having this hassle down the road?

I thought they were meant to send you these things in a language you could understand?

One assumes that if you get pulled over in France again and they check, you'll be requiring the services of a decent lawyer.

Is there a certain period of time that it lapses? I thought that the UK opted out of their citizens being able to be charged speeding fines by post (we can still get done by on the spot fines in france apparently). What i need to know is if i ignore it will it lapse eventually?!

Really?

Maybe they thought you hadn't been using any protection?

I have been flashed a few times by French cameras. Never heard a thing.
They do put them in some right dodgy places though.

I would ignore it, 180 euros for 20KPH over the limit? Blimey

EDIT. Just noticed it was in a hire car. Hmmmmm, not so sure now, they will have a copy of your licence.

Just ignore the place. I intentionally get the ferry now to Spain. Bloody French.

No. It will increase eventually, it never lapses. I have no idea what powers they have against a UK bank account and license. Probably not much. But if you drive there again and get controlled for whatever reason, be prepared for a huge bill.

180€ is because it was paid neither in first intent nor in second. It starts at 45€ if you pay early, then 68€ is the "normal fine" (some months to pay), before it goes to 180€. I've just checked it can still climb up to 450€.

Me? I’d have paid up day one as I go to France a lot and don’t need to stress over less (per original fine) than I’d spend on a meal for 4 almost anywhere other than Witherspoons...

As for the OP – Still think it should be paid but so long as they never have cause to talk to Les Ficks at anytime in the next 60 odd years they are likely to get away with it.

Okay, it’s highly unlikely that they will send Action Service in to bundle you into a van on your way to the Post Office over something like this but I suspect that you will be spending a few very uncomfortable hours in a French Police Station at a time that will not be convenient to you and leaving a lot poorer if they do catch up with you. Your call.

If it were me I'd just not go to France anymore and forget about the fines.

But if you do need to go back in to the land of the Frenchies then it would be prudent to pay.

I'm not that much of a special case but the number of people who don't think that they are likely to go to France again in the next 40+ years of their life stuns me!

If nothing else it is a load of PH'ers saying they will never go to Le Mans or return there. Now that is just plain daftness!

I am reminded of the guy who ran an online betting company used by US citizens. Naughty. He explained he would simply never go to the US to avoid being arrested and jailed.

Then his plane got diverted once due to bad weather......... and landed in Texas.
