Question.
If some yobbo goes around and defaces the speed limit roadsigns, say by putting a 1 in front of a 40 to make 140, is the limit for the road enforceable at 40?
Supposing its done in such a way as it looks to be done by the authorities? Ie, a legal signage?
Only reason i ask is that some bugger in my area has done just that and i reckoned i could get away with hoonage at 140 legally....lololol
Any bibs care to comment?

Pass. I've seen a few (30) signs altered to read (80).
I guess as the max NSL in the UK is 70, the book would well and truly get thrown at you!

I would think if the sign could not be read then the limit could not be imposed were you caught above the intended speed.

But, I also think doing 140mph would get you done for a host of other crimes.

But if you dont get caught..............

Or would the speed be defaulted to say 30MPH?

I've seen a number of limit signs swapped round. e.g. from a 40 zone into a 30 zone someone had rotated the signs so as you came from the 40 into the 30 it read as 40 and visa versa. If you didn't know the road then you could quite easily get caught out by carrying on at 40. What would happen if a Talivan was just round the corner?

If it was altered to resemble another sign then you might have some excuse.

As signs saying "80" (defaced 30) or "140" by putting an extra 1 on, aren't allowed or seen anyway, I don't think your defence would get you very far, sorry to say.

Good idea though...

A while back a few of the signs here got twisted around. 30 on one side as you entered a residential area with a 40 on the other side as you left.

It did make me wonder...

You've seen too many Cannonball Runs, where Catherine Bach spray paints the speed limit signs, then climbs into the Lambourghini...

Sorry deltaf...any excuse to return to adolescent fantasies about Catherine Back....

If the sign was obscured to read another limit..then there would be a small defence...

However, if the limit was above the highest UK speed limit of 70mph, or 60mph on a single carraigeway....no defence....

Entirely understood old bean.

I can understand any guy's thoughts readily turning back to Bach - and I don't mean the composer.

Best wishes all,
Dave.
