Makes me chuckle every time I see it, but I'm afraid this has probably been posted many times on here...

I'm sorry, I need to get this right.
Are you saying that the police helicopter is used to book speeders?
Do you have any records of this and where it is being done?

I've heard of UK police using both 'copters and planes to book speeders on DC's with large markings painted onto the road at a set distance.. I also would be interested to see when and where it is being done. I know scameras make a killing, but its gotta be a hugely expensive and inefficient way of catching people?

North Wales police use the helicopter for catching speeders, particularly at weekends and aimed primarily at motorbikes.

The police say that they do not specifically send the 'copter out to catch speeders, but that they do it on the way back from another call out. However, I have been told by one of the pilots that this is not true and that they are sent out specifically.

I've seen helicopters catching speeders on the the A413 DC between Chalfont St Peter and Uxbridge (hiding behind the viaduct) and also on the M1 near Sheffield.

If I'm not mistaken, this is Brunstrom's territory.
This could be the very thing that would be his downfall.
These lunatics have to be made to realise that they DO NOT own the equipment at the disposal of the police.
It is paid for out of the public purse and as such renders them accountable for any misuse.
I cannot think of a more grossly, totally disproportionate abuse of funds than using an aircraft of any type to prosecute motorists for a simple speeding charge.
A helicopter is a monstrously expensive piece of kit, both to purchase initially and to service and run.
The design of it is such that the slower it travels right down to stationery hover, the more expensive it is to run.
I know that in Strathclyde the use of the helicopter is strictly controlled and monitored because of the running costs. It is only justifiable in the detection of serious crime.
Can anyone get any more information on this; if it was true it would be an idea to ask Paul Smith to do a wee feature on it on his site asking Brunstrom to reveal costings and operational records for his "eye in the sky", and then listen with interest to his attempted justifications.

A413 - you have got to be kidding. Shirley all the spare 'copters in the SE would be busy ferrying squashed passengers from accidents to hospital. I can understand them chasing down some car thieves or similar though.

This my neck of the woods and I have never heard of this being done. It is however very close to the flight path for Denham airfield and there is a lot of traffic, both helicopter and fixed wing, and someone may be confusing this. If it was true trust me I would know by now.

The police helicopter is not used for speed enforcement in TVP, thats my patch and if we could spare the Helicopter for that im sure i would have known about it by now. Like IOLARE says, its too expensive to maintain and run to waste time airbourne with speeding drivers.

Indeed there is such a sign as you exit Belper towards Matlock on the 50mph (ex NSL) A6 to which most of the narrow feeder roads are NSL.

I assume that their targets are Bikers.

Gotta be good value for money though, using a 'copter to nick speeders

re: A413 copter...

Tell me what the police helicopter was doing there then. Hovering motionless, using the viaduct for cover. There are even white markers on the DC!

Saw it with my own eyes but can't prove 100% he was catching speeders.
