'Car-derived' vs 'Van-derived' speed limit ?

I was talking to a guy (van driver) the other day who said he had been stopped for speeding @ 70mph on NSL Dual Carriageway (70 limit).
He said that the cop said that because his van was not 'car-derived' (ie not based on a car design) that the speed limit was 60 not 70, however in a car-derived van (Escort etc) the limit was as per a car, he reckons though that the M/way van speed limit is still 70mph.
Is this right, if so what other restrictions apply to 'van-derived' Vans.

Slight mis-read there Cm old bean, his mate's van is not an Escort type, and from what was said is indeed correct, also watch weight limits etc.

Indeed - his Van is a Fiat (something-or-other) but only Escort sized, so is this correct about what a Van is derived from, as I'd never heard of it (not a van driver I'm afraid!).
If so what is the ruling re pick-up trucks?, as a workmate of mine has just got a Mitsubishi (4x4) L200 and AFAIK he assumes that normal car speed limits apply but it is a commercial vehicle (unless derived from a Shogun etc?). Certainly this is news to me and I would have assumed that car limits applied and probably got caught had I been driving a van.
Goodness me. After looking at that link it amazes me how little I know about, well, everything really! I thought I was up-to-speed on these matters but apparently not. Almost makes me wonder if we should be re-tested on the highway code/driving test every 5 years or so. Might just have to go out in the murter and blow out a few cobwebs.
