OK to watch TV while driving ?
Discussion
I've seen quite a few references in internet forums where people have modified their in-car TV/DVD systems so that they work while the car is moving. For example, with BMW's factory-fit TV system, you can apparently buy some aftermarket cables that bypass the automatic shut-off when the car starts moving.
Given the dubious observation skills of yer average motorist, I'm not so keen on people being able to watch Eastenders while obliviously tooling up the middle lane of the M4.
Have any of the police on this forum ever stopped anyone who was watching TV while driving ? Maybe they now need to fit all Gatsos with whatever technology is in TV license detector vans....

I totally agree with you...most drivers havent mastered the art of driving never mind watching telly as well.
Funny tho,ive reported several lorry drivers for this offence

Yep, most of us know how to "fix" the DVD driven satnav so that it will play films. Most of us use them when we are on break though. Unfortunately, there are muppets in every sector of the motoring community.

All the aftermarket in-car TV headunits from the main retailers have a wire that you're supposed to fit so you can't watch them while on the move. I've never known one installer to actually connect the wire up.
There was a guy in the press recently who had a PS2 in his Corsa. He jumped a set of lights, and when the cops stopped him he had Colin McRae 2 on the screen. Even though he wasn't playing it as such (it was on the demo screen) he was stung with a Dangerous Driving charge because of it. (Don't think he was actually charged with running the light)
Makes me wonder what the plod make of TV headunits that display an image - It's technically no different to the many new cars that come with 'screens' as standard, but to the untrained eye could resemble someone watching TV, or playing a game....

Makes you think tho...whats the difference between a TV and a Satnav screen?
Precisely. There are far too many gizmos and gadgets in cars/trucks today. I wonder how many accidents have been caused by people not concentrating on their driving while they set the climate control/adjust the graphic equaliser/ fiddle with the lecky "toys".
Didn`t Issigonis originally specify that the Mini should not have a radio as he was a passionate believer in the above?

I was passed only the other day on the M3 by a Focus estate with a sat nav map display blazing away on top of his dash.
I have seen this sort of thing , i dont think they are standard fit sat nav , they would certainly put me off the way they seem mounted on top of the dash rather than "in" the center bit
I had an S8 for a while that had the mod to allow TV whilst moving. Only because a tech offered the service gratis and I at the time, stupidly, thought why not sounds like a laugh.
Its bloody lethal and no mistake.
Sat Nav is completely different though because you only glance at it and the audio instructions are also there.

Indeed... we all know it's dangerous to try and read a map while driving. I've never used a SatNav but I don't see how its screen would be any different from a paper map.
The difference is the irritating woman shouting at you to turn left in 100mts
I see, they have audio backup. All of them, I hope...
Anyone remember the Week Ending sketch about the talking Maestro in the 80s?
