Recently a Smart Roadster parks along my road with a cover over it. Is this legal as number plates are under the cover?

Edit: Didn't read. If the plates are obscured I don't think it is ok. Suggest you have a chat with them to let them know it'll need to be un-obscured (on that pic though it kind of looks as though the front one at least is visible)?

As I understand it, it's illegal on a number of points if it's on a public road.

1) It's a legal requirement to display a tax disc if the car is on the road (although this is being abolished soon).
2) The car must have functioning reflectors.
3) I think the car must be displaying a valid registration plate, but not 100% sure about that.

I doubt anyone cares, though. smile

If it's a known neighbours car, does it really matter?

Can see the front number plate poking out. . . but tax disc and reflectors also obscured which I don't think is legal. Those Smart roadsters are notoriously leaky, and the weather is a bit st at the mo so unless you've driven into it and are trying to think of an excuse to claim off his insurance maybe just let this one go?

I'd find better things to worry about. Front plate is visible, rear plate/ disc are easily checked if needs be.

Exactly. Why do you care?

Only mildly interested & thought someone would know the answer!
Also I wondered why they would use it as the car is obviously dirty under the cover so must be scratching the paint each time they put it on or take it off.

Maybe they don't give a toss? Not exactly a high-value car, is it?

Not expensive, but un unusual one. I would think you'd only have one if you cared about it.

I think smart roadsters like to leak a bit... might be the reason for the cover.

It's actually not a bad idea given the weather.
However I would guess these covers are designed for off road use.

I've seen better ones for sale (don't ask me where, just a random memory) that have clear plastic sections for the number plates, and reflective bits

Methinks someone need to get a life! I'd say that if it was in snowy weather, then the owner makes a lot more sense keeping his car free of snow than the half-wits who can't even clear their whole windscreen never mind the side or rear windows!

Does it matter, the car can only go forward by the look of it, so doesn't need reflectors and plate at the back? Not like someone is going to crash into it deliberately and then claim it was invisible.. Oh..
