Just spoke to my brother who is in the Herts police - he arrested someone last night for being drunk and in charge of his vehicle and the guy was 6 times over the limit. HOW much does one have to drink to be 6 times over (I am expecting pints in double figures here).
Thoughts ?

Half a bottle of scotch will see you right over the limit and drinking one of them isnt hard. So that sort of quantity drunk very quickly should see you 5 times over at least.

I reckon its a lot less than one would think...

Pretty sure I couldn't *find* the car if I was 6 times over.

Of course, my point is that people dont neccesarily realise the level to which its effecting them and that 5 or 6 times over could easily be achieved even mid week...

Funny you say that - apparently the offender had been walking around a small car park for about 10 minutes trying to find his car when the police turned up.

posted something similar.

1 pint (swallowed and absorbed instantly!) will push your breath alcohol level up by 15mg/ml.
Legal limit is 35mg/ml (or 2 + 1/3 pints)
Liver gets rid of 7.5mg/ml an hour.
absorption is affected by how full of food your stomach is.
Liver gets rids LINEARLY, ie, the same rate regardless of alcohol level.
SO, if you drink 2 pints you are just under at 30mg/ml
For every pint you have after that, add 2 hours from when you started drinking.
Go out at 7pm and have 6 pints, you need to get rid of 4 pints to get bellow the limit of 2 which takes 8 hours, that takes you to 3am.
It will be 7am before it's all gone.

That's a rule of thumb of course that I use.

to get 6 times over - jesus!!

how quick can you drink?

6 times over would be 6 x 35 = 210mg/ml.

if you had 1 pint every 10 minutes you'd absorb 15 and you liver would remove 1.25 = 13.75

you'd have to have 13.5 pints, and drink them in just over 2 hours.

I don't think you'd be able to p**s quick enough would you?

incidently, it would be about 9pm the following night before you'b be bellow the drink drive limit again.

Actually, there was a post that said that some forces won't bring you in for less than about 40mg, even though this is over the limit.

If you think about it, you need to be tested on a calibrated breath test machine. If it takes 45 minutes before you get to the station and on the machine, you could have dropped nearly 6mg/ml and therefore be under the limit again.

I think the highest I have ever seen on the intoximeter is about 160. The person was a chronic alcoholic. Frankly you'd have to be for your body to still be working sufficiently to blow into the machine whilst not actually being dead due to alcohol poisoning.

My mother is a retired alcohol abuse counsellor. Some of her clients would drink 2 litres of vodka per day! That's the kind of amounts we're talking to be 5 or 6 times the limit.

xxplod, would you not say the the drink drive limit is a little high?

I'm not particularly anti drink, nor pro drink drive, just think that 35mg is quite high. ie from 8pm - 11pm I could theoretically drink 4 pints and be just under the limit, which is a tad worrying in my opinion.

I met somebody who once clocked 190-something (can't remember exactly) on the intoximeter, mid morning as well!

5 year ban IIRC.

My car only weighs 1050kgs...does that mean I can drink nearly 50% more?

Got this in my new California driver licenSe:
1 drink is:
1 1/4 oz. 80-proof liquor (even mixed)
4oz. of wine
10oz. of 5.7% beer

Driving under the influence here is a blood alcohol of .08%, I believe there also?

So, if I do my math correctly, 2 (UK) pints in 2 hours for a 185 lb. person will get you to this point. Possibly more people are "impaired" than is currently realised.

Plod, please correct me if this is not accurate, or to translate to UK standards.

bryan35 - you are quite right. The UK limit is higher than in most EC countries. You are still going to be quite significantly impaired even right on the limit. I think we have a fair limit - when you hear people saying they were "done" for drink driving and they only had two pints - frankly they are talking rubbish. As things stand, if you are convicted of DD in the UK, you were simply NOT fit to drive and the high fine, ban, future insurance problems are well deserved.

Personally, for second offenders I'd like to see a mandatory prison term.

So, how does the impairment compare with driving 5mph over the limit, or your brakes being 10% below peak efficiency, or your tyres being 15% worn? And how does the supposed decreased responsibility compare with a 17 year old and someone 20 years older?

Should choosing to drive twice whilst under 18 lead to a mandatory prison ban?
