Reporting an assumed abandoned car

The car ha been unmoved for over 2 weeks, tax expired.
How difficult is it and why does noone want to know?
Our local council has a web page claiming they deal with it but it seems so difficult - trail as follows
First I ring the council, ring in fact the number on their web page that deals with it
"we don't deal with it sorry"
"but your web site gives this number for this purpose"
"have you tried the police"
"you claim to handle it, and as such your web site says to ring this number"
"we don't handle it sorry, try the police, do you want their number"
"do you deal with rat infestatrions"
"yes, environmental health"
"I think the car is infested with rats"
"that isn't something we can investigate sir"
So I ring the police
"Hi, like to report what I think is an abandoned vehicle"
"Have you tried the council"
"Yes, they said to ring you"
"We don't deal with it"
"Fine, I'll set it on fire with some low explosives and then someone will"
"No sir, not a good idea, let me transfer you to the DVLA"

Just an update on this.
Reported it in person to police lstation last monday. They said DVLA aren't bothered until a car is 6 weeks past due tax renewal.
Car is still there. No stickers or indicators to say it is known to police.
I heard there is a rule that you can apply for ownership of a car if you undertake to tax it. Is this true?

It's got nothing to do with Police, you said yourself it's abandoned? They will have done a check on the registration you gave them to make sure it's not nicked, that's all. It IS the Councils responsibility, unless it's on something like an estate in which case it will be up to the Management Company of the estate. Abandoned cars are a complete pain in the arse. My local Council will take a car away for just £20 yet people still dump them, suprisingly enough though never outside their own houses....

It's on a public road, untaxed so there is an offence somewhere. DVLA apparently give 6 weeks "grace" before investigating further though I doubt there has been any "previous" investigations.
Now, if the car allegedly has a substantial amount of cannabis in the boot I'm sure clerks would jump
This royally pisses me off. See my recent transgression (parking for 2 mins where I shouldn't have, but inconveniencing nobody). Compare and contrast with a local spot where a Mk.2 Golf has been left illegally just before a set of lights, blocking the LH (straight on) lane. Consequently, all straighton traffic has to pass it in the RH (right turn) lane. This makes it a joy to behold in busy times, especially as the straight on lane has a filter arrow. But of course people can't get through due to the parked car and queueing traffic in RH lane.

double standards, much easier to book me for nothing other than a technicality than to actually bother to track down / book the person who dumped the car. And that's what it comes down to.

And that's what it comes down to.So .... this leads me to believe you can leave off taxing your car for 6 weeks (check the insurance first). No penalty sir. No, no penalty sir. No, still no penalty sir

So give me a good reason why I should tax my car if there are so many flouting the law

There is a plethora of law regarding removal of such objects both by Police and LA. But as this costs them cash then they are not really interested unless you bang the desk or get adverse publicity through the media (good story here in your case on inefficiency).
