Back at the start of December I dropped the car off for 'just a service'. Two months and a few grand later its back with a top end rebuild. Tax expired at the end of December and I never expected it to take so long so didnt consider sorn.
Im off down the post office later for a new tax disc. I assume they will issue me a new disc starting 01.02.14? This would leave a months tax liability outstanding. Am I in trouble?

Chances are it will be picked up when the DVLA carries out its sweep for unlicensed / un-SORNed vehicles in January. If it is, expect a demand for cash to be heading your way..

Pretty sure you can get one starting 1/1/14 if you ask & your paperwork (MOT & Ins) will show it was covered then.

No idea if they still do it, but Post Offices used to keep tax discs, I think for three months so could still sell you a disc to cover when you forgot.

Perhaps 10 years ago, my mum did this, bought the correct tax disc and never heard any more.

DVLA though seem to be keener on 'fining' people now, but I'd still have a go with the post office rather than on-line as that probably will produce tax disc + fine.

If you can't get a back-dated tax disc, perhaps letter to DVLA explaining what happened, with 'Proof' that it was where you said it was (off the road), and why? ..and plead the out-of-sight/ out-of-mind syndrome!

...or is this opening a whole (painful) can of wigglies?

..or wait to see what happens....

Whether or not you can backdate more than a month (I don't think you can), you only have 14 days from expiry of the old licence before the late licensing penalty kicks in..
