I have received a notice of Intended Prosecution from Leicestershire police, dated 20/2/14. As below:
In accordance with section 1 of the Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988, I hereby give you notice that it is intended to take proceedings against the driver of the motor vehicle XXXXXX.
For the alleged offence of Motor vehicle fail to comply with Red/green arrow lane closure flashing light signals - automatic equipment FAIL TO COMPLY RED TRAFFIC LIGHT (CAMERA); Time into red 3.6 secs.

Travelling back from Leicester on 14/2/2014, went through red light and didn't realise until couple of flashes, weather was horrible and was raining. Looking for the right lane for M1 as it was a complex multi lane choice and multiple junction choice just ahead. Had seen lots of red light from cars ahead at junction an lots of green lights at next junction ahead. I thought I was choosing a lane and didn't realise that I was at a traffic lit junction.
Which option do we get? Fixed penalty and points on licence or a court hearing. Is 3.6 secs too late?

3.6 secs is way too late.
Understand your pressure loading during poor weather and multiple lights causing glare, but, they'll have heard it all before and you'll pay a larger fine with the same points in my opinion.
Take the fixed penalty and move on I think would be the best advice, which you're sure to get more of when this thread gets moved to the happy part of PH named SP&L...

Some areas have a course - from memory three seconds is the limit of their discretion. Elsewhere, it's a fixed penalty (if you qualify) or in any case you can elect for a court hearing - which would be incredibly stupid if one or both of the other options are available - as court means an income based fine, prosecution costs and a victim surcharge.

That's literally a stone's throw up the road from Leicestershire Police Headquarters. And the same from the big shopping centre Fosse Park, usually an extremely busy junction during shop opening hours
The cameras on that direction were installed some years ago as a result of some serious accidents due to non-compliance.
Lucky with that delay that you weren't cleared up by something travelling from Leicester towards Enderby.
ETA. A few years ago Mrs paintman got caught by the cameras on the other side of the junction - i.e in the opposite direction to you. Probably too busy thinking about the shopping

To determine eligibility - call the appropriate person (contact details your documents) and discuss the time on red, your history of attending approved driving courses and endorsements on your licence.If you're offered a course then do it; or
If not and you're offered a fixed penalty then pay it and win 3 points; or
If you get a summons then write a nice letter to the court, pay the fine etc. and win 3 points.

I'm guessing the OP was here. If so, and the cameras were installed some years ago, where are they hidden as I can't see any? Is there is an all-red pedestrian phase? If not, with lights the OP jumped having been at red for 3.6 seconds, I too am curious how on earth he managed to avoid a collision with crossing traffic at that time on a Friday evening.The cameras on that direction were installed some years ago as a result of some serious accidents due to non-compliance.

His insurer won't like a TS10 on his licence at renewal. Most view that much more unfavourably than a SP30.

I was coming the other way (from inner ring road toward island) and there was heavy traffic, a wet road and a low winter sun so visibility of the lights was poor anyway. I was in a backed-up queue in green lights and close behind a white van which sensibly stopped before the bit of road for traffic coming from the right in case the lights changed before he could clear the other side. There are lights the other side of the carriageway too but my proximity to the rear of the van meant I couldn't see them.
As he moved off, I followed him as I was already past the lights (or at least I thought so). When I received the NIP I challenged it as I had no recollection of jumping the lights at any point and the two camera images showed me tight up against the white van and with my back wheels just behind and then just over the sensors as I moved off. I don't recall being under any danger from traffic starting from the traffic lights to the right (hence my surprise at the NIP) so I can't have been that late crossing the sensor.
Straightforward £60/3 points that one.
Still see lots of accidents on this island. There are only cameras on the to/from M1 line, the to/from Leicester line has no cameras on it and this seems to be where the accidents happen most, so the OP was lucky in this respect. A common occurrence at rush hour is for cars queuing to get onto the M1 to back up onto the island and they don't leave a space, so when the lights change for those of us wanting to head across their carriageway, we end up having to sit and wait for a few cycles of the light sequence whilst they sit staring stonily ahead as they know damn well they shouldn't be there.

It would be the same offence. Fail comply.
No idea what the time was & some years ago so no longer have any paperwork.
Clean licence, she took the points & pays her own fines!
Its an 'absolute offence' i.e either the red was on when you crossed the stop line or it wasn't. You would need to be able to prove it wasn't or that the signs etc were in some way defective/unlawful. Otherwise you'd be trying mitigation to avoid a ban if this took you over the totting-up limit.
