hi got two parking tickets from blackpool council on consecutive days for parking in a residents area without a permit

My car was over heating and had no choice but to abandon it for the weekend and get it looked at on the monday.

They have said if I show them the repair receipt they will wipe of the tickets.

Should i believe them or are they likely to mess me about?

I had to have a thermostat replacement and coolant flush.

I don't understand how this is a question worth asking.
1) Show them the receipt and they will let you off for having a genuine excuse.
2) Don't show then anything and pay the fine because you parked where you weren't meant to.

1) You show them, they might do what they've said. They might not and you'll have to pay
2) Don't do what they've said, you'll have to pay anyway.

Yes the repairs are cheaper than a parking ticket.

And the repairs + parking tickets are cheaper than a new engine or head gasket or whatever the possible outcome of driving a car with a duff cooling system.

Correct.

Now go and post them a nice letter asking for teh tickets to be waved and sending them a copy of the the receipts for the parts and labour (if any for the latter) and wait.

Chances are if they are in a good mood and your letter is nice, polite and helpful they will send you a letter back confirming that they have cancelled the tickets.

If they do mess you about then feel free to keep at them.

Surest way to still have to pay the fine though is to do nothing or send a 'sty' letter with no proof.

Did you not have breakdown cover? Do you have a receipt for the repairs? They wont be very impressed if you just send them a £3 receipt for a thermostat and one for a couple of litres of antifreeze.

I've had this problem (overheating) .But it was way back in the days when we had Police Wardens . I had a car with overheating problems. I'd gotten it off a main road into a double yellow side street to let it cool down. Simple call to local police station with car location and VRN and wardens were made aware. Police were sympathetic ,since if I'd not gotten off main road,it'd have caused problems.
