Speeding on unlit UK motorways

Has anyone ever been stopped for speeding on an unlit section of UK motorway?

I stop many for doing just that in unlit areas if they are taking the p1ss!

To piss and speed at the same time is a tad dangerous I'd guess.

Plus the seat gets soggy.

But do you determine their speed by following them or by another means.
If you follow them, is there still a distance that a speeding motorist must cover, to be judged as speed. If so what distance?

You would be surprised at the number who just go sailing past fully liveried cars in the dark with gay abandon (the punters having the gay abandon not the bib )

If they are going in excess of the threshold I chose for the conditions/circumstances, then I will follow them. 2/10ths of a mile is enough although to be fair we normally give the target vehicle at least 1/2 a mile and sometimes well over this!

Stopping is done in the safest place possible in the circs. Never on a bend and always as far to the left of the H/S as is possible. Blue lights are not always illuminated on the H/S but hazards and red rear flashers so that there is less chance of rubber neckers from the other carriageway causing problems. The vehicle stopped is not kept there for longer than is necessary to achieve the objective and then clear instructions are given for safe rejoining of the carriageway. They are given in plain simple language but even then are apparently difficult to interpret/understand in many cases!!!!!

Some people deserve all they get, talk about lack of observation, the bloody things light up like a christmas tree when your headlights pick 'em out...

Indeed it is not the best way of remaining comfortable.

The simultaneous use of a vehicle at high speed only makes it worse!

I have absolutely no sympathy in drivers giving a bit of lip to coppers when it was a fair cop. In my view you have to crazy and/or stupid to give someone gip when they have power of life and death over you! plus when cops don't ticket you I feel so grateful I usually don't speed at all for the rest of the day!

I was stopped at over 100mph on an unlit section of motorway (M8) late at night. Plod were on a bridge over motorway (hence no reflection as headlights angled too low) so were invisible to drivers. Used vascar to time me between 2 bridges - 101.2mph. By the time they caught me I was already back down to < 70mph. There were no other cars on the road for miles in either direction.

Into the back of the battenberg, quick chat "the road is a bit wet tonight sir, take it easy, on your way".

Was I pleased? Damn right I was.

Made me think of the consequences if I had lost my license....now keep it within the guidelines for roadside ticketing.
