M3 Hook Jctn this morning...

Northbound from Southampton direction - Hook junction.
Three cameras strapped to railings of flyover with white van tucked off to the left.
I'm assuming that this was one of those lovely safety cameras and that's another £60 from me in Tony's treasure chest ... must have made a fortune this morning as everything (when I popped over the crest to head down to that junction) on the road was doing 80+.
Ah well - kinda ironic I guess given that my last 3 points hit 4 years old (and hence completely expired) last Friday.

I originally thought it was too (hence didn't slow down too much *cough*) but don't APNR ops usually have an accompanying team of either bikes or cars to come hooning down the next on-slip to catch any "offenders" - there were no traffic units there as far as I could tell.
Around us APNR ops also usually have a farly conspicuously sited and liveried "Police Support Vehicle" in attendence too. (I assume that's where they keep the donuts and coffe, right?

Well I was driving along there as well at about 80mph yesterday and saw the cameras on the tripods too late as well.
Would be a shame if I did get points, as was having my last blast in my trusty old Cavalier Sri before I become a Mondeo man!
From what I could see, I reckon (hope as well) that they were ANPR. There was a motorbike bib racing along the slip road off that bridge as I went past. Thought he was going to pull me, but he went straight past.
From the setup I saw in Sussex a while back, it looked exactly the same and that was definitely ANPR, so I reckon we are probably ok.
Has made me seriously think about getting some sort of radar detector now though...

This is the next junction from where I'm stationed. Few points:
1. Hantspol very seldom put Revenue Vans on motorway bridges.
2. At 80 mph you almost certainly would NOT get a ticket, even if it was a revenue van.
3. From what you've said - almost certainly ANPR.

I've often seen them (APNR ops) at the M3 Jct 7 Basingstoke exit (near Sainsburys) and they're usually easy to spot that they're APNR given that there's usually half a dozen or so additional vehicles there (including teapot one ).
I won't be at all upset if it was an APNR setup of course - I'm all for picking off a few uninsured / untaxed / unregistered muppets wherever possible - it just seemed to be very sparsely populated for support vehicles and personel and catching a quick glance at the rear of the van as I got closer to the flyover it did have the black flappy window in one of the rear doors so I just assumed that it'd been a speeding trap rather than APNR.
Also I'll point out now that if is wasn't an APNR op (which it sounds like it's likely it was now) and I do get ticketed and 3 points / £60 then I'll be paying up like a good boy as I should have seen them and I should have backed off more ... I did see the van stood on the flyover from quite a distance and it didn't move off with the other traffic so I had an idea that it was something "not right". As it was I just assumed it was an APNR at first and only when I got closer did I think "Bugger - I bet that it isn't!"
(Anyway - driving a Volvo diesel estate and having no points on my licence at the moment is just too boring to contemplate...)

The point is though mate that if Bib were there on the motorway instead, then they would not have considered doing you at that speed unless there was some other reason such as dangerous driving etc.
I have (had?) a clean licence as well, but would quite like to keep it that way instead of paying stealth taxes.
I spotted the van from a long way back as well, but visibility and conditions were good so didnt back off either.
Think they should have a big logo/sign on the side of the van saying "Smile, you have just been ANPR'd" or something similar! I am all in favour of them getting the unwashed/untaxed/uninsured off our roads.

Definately an ANPR op. I spoke with the Sergeant who ran it. They were using bikes to pull the cars/lorries which may explain why they were less noticeable. Subject vehicles were all pulled at Fleet Services.
Quite sucessful - 25 vehicles pulled, quite a few no documents, overweight HGV etc....

It's quite worrying when our Motorway unit run a check site op - it's normally about 75%+ of vehicles that have defects...

Let's keep the ANPR operations on any road that'll mean lots of people caught.
If there's also stops to remind people that their brake light is blown or that their tyres are bald, then all the better.
