Now I consider myself a pretty liberal-ish type of guy, but I've been out with a few guys tonight who think there is nothing wrong with using the n word (sounds like rigger)

I don't know if I have got this out of all sense of proporion but I am wondering which PH's use this word, and if so why?

I must admit that it is not a word I could ever drop into a conversation.

If you're black it's OK to use it, if you're white it's not. At least, that's how it seems some times.

Personally, I would never use it as I believe it to be unacceptable. If I ever have an argument with a black man that degenerates into schoolboy name calling , I'd base my names on his behaviour, not the colour of his skin.

Let's see, we can't beat up people for being a nigger/ gay/ woman/ moslem/ fat/ crippled/ thick.

We can't even insult people by calling them nigger/ gay/ woman moslem/ fat/ crippled/ thick.

What can we do to let off steam?

Oh, I know, just go out and kill a male pensioner, or a schoolboy. So that's alright then. Did someone mention a caring sharing warm and wooly liberal "society"?

its a word, how bad can it be. to be honest me and some of my closer friends will use it when were in a private setting, and joke around. But I wouldnt go shouting it out in public, i mean, I dont wanna get shot.

For real, as long as you dont use it in an offensive way, then its fine. But if you use it in an offense way than your gonna get shot.

Use of this and other, similar, words in public shows that you are willing to cross what is now seen as a cultural norm and hence you are beyond the pale. Standards change. Be smart and change too; adaptability is a signature of the intelligent.

There is nothing wrong with it - depending on the context. I and friends use it in a derogatory mocking sarcastic kind of way to each other. No malice or prejudice within just a bunch of friends being stupid and using a risque word because we know it's not PC.

So, are you saying that the "liberals" would sign up as concentration camp guards if nazis became the norm? Or just that "liberals" lack intelligence?

And what is intelligent about following the herd? Especially if they are lemmings heading for a cliff?

And did everyone believe in Einstein's Theories before he showed how smart he was and proved his intelligence by accepting the standard beliefs?

Someone nutty rocker called me one at the works christmas party (some time ago) for no reason other than to impress his friends, I knocked him clean out and left.

Police came into work and took me to station and one understood that it was wrong whilst the other wound me up asking me things like why does that bother you.. etc

Didnt get charged got a verbal warning at work, nutty rocker got a written warning..

I always thought this guy had the needle or something and hey presto I found out that night what his problem was...

Let me see if I have got this right.

It's not OK to speak to someone less than nicely.

But it's OK to KO someone clean out.

A policeman should know that it is wrong to speak to someone less than nicely, but accept that it is OK to KO someone.

If you speak less than nicely to someone at work you deserve a written warning, but if you knock them clean out that only deserves a verbal warning (did you then knock clean out the person who gave you a verbal?)

By the way, didn't the PC tell you it isn't PC to mock the nuttily afflicted?

What the is the world coming to?

People are getting murdered (and knocked clean out) and the PC PC's are aware it's not nice to be not nice!

I believe it would all depend on the context.

Words such as 'nigger' have always previously been used as a derogatory insult to black people and is slang for 'Negro'. current useage between black people is about (I believe) reclaiming the words to take the power out of them, in much the same way that gay men will call each other 'fairy'and 'queen' etc.

Use the words out in the open will generally be regarded as being very offensive.

Diesel ed,
Why would you want to insult someone who is black / gay / female / muslim / disabled etc just because they are? It 's wrong to do so , just as it would be to insult the sterotypical 'white middle class male' just for being so.

I am often confused by all this. When I watched the last "MOBO" awards, I was thinking to myself "Would it be legal to have a MOWO award?"

It's all political correctness gone too far, and it's getting worse.

The word "Nigger" was not originally used as an insult, it was descriptive (Latin Niger=black) - it just developed into an insult when the rights movements started. Even now, some people say "Negro" as a description, not as an insult, although some people (mainly whites) feel it is derogatory, as they are confused about what is racist and what isn't. Ultimately it shouldn't really matter what the word is, it's just the intentions of the way some sad people say it.

In the example above the bloke clearly said it in a racist manner. Punching him will not change his prejudiced views. You need to accept verbal insults in the same way as anyone - i.e. do nothing; if it is particularly nasty, put in a written complaint about the individual concerned.

There is no place for racism, and hopefully one day the word "racism" will no longer exist.

Yawn. Here we go again.

The word nigger is offensive to black people as it was a derogatory term used by whites in the colonial slavery days. It was also used to reinforce negative racial stereotypes. It is still offensive to black people if used by a white person. Yes, it's literal meaning derives from the word black, and yes, it's OK for one black person to call another a nigger because typically it is not being used to subjagate or intentionally to offend.

Let me give you another example; Bitch.

It is offensive to women as it is a derogatory term used by men, often to reinforce negative stereotypes. It's literal meaning is a description of a female canine. Yes it's OK for one woman to call another a bitch as quite often it's done in a playful sense and not intentionally to subjagate or offend.

Yes, words can be offensive and insulting. Yes, common usage can be quite different from literal meaning. Yes, a word can be more or less offensive depending on who is using it and also where or when it is used.

I personally never use the word but I have heard one black guy call another one.

So I guess that it's ok for a coloured person to use it but not for anyone else.

Put like that, it doesn't sound pc does it?

A little test of acceptability.

Would you mind if your white middle class mother used it in general conversation with your affro-caribean/black girl friend?

You'd be a bit embarrassed right ?

Would you want your kids to say it to their black sunday school teacher?

I think the answer may be : NO (for most people)

Incidently a peer at university happened to call himself a 'brown boy' and refered to me as 'grey' or 'pink' which after 7 pints was quite amusing. Afterall he pointed out "I'm not exactly black, and your not exactly white"

This post could be about as conducive as the hunting posts - everyone has views, nothing will change them. What has changed my view on this post though is TonyToniTone profile. Have a look, click on his website and go to the moneypennys pictures. This man has done very very very well - never seen so many honeys in one place.

Sorry to change the subject but I don't really see it going anywhere. Will be told to pack my bags now so i'm off.
