Trying to report a "non-crime"

So, here I am sitting at my computer catching up on about 3 weeks worth of PistonHeads posts when the doorbell goes. Nothing normally odd about that, except it happened 15 minutes ago and it's now 10 past midnight!
So I wander down to the front door and switch on the outside light to see three (possibly four) parker-hooded 20-somethings all gathered under the porch.
Me: Yes?
Bloke:
Me: What?
Bloke:
Me: What do you want?
Bloke: C A
Me: WHAT??
Bloke: CSA!
Me: Show me some ID at the window now, or I'm calling the police.
Bloke: Fine, call the police work with them anyway.
At this point I head back upstairs to get the phone but by the time I've looked back outside they've scarpered.
It's obviously a highly dodgy ruse to get me to open the door, at which point I imagine I would be waving goodbye to many of my possessions.
My question: Should I report this as a crime? I've tried Crimestoppers, but no answer. Same with the Thames Valley Police's 0845 number. Nobody seems interested at this time of night - and I don't believe it warrants a 999 call, as no crime was committed.
However, I'm worried someone in the neighbourhood will be gullible enough to open their door to these scum...

You could try the Thames Valley central number @ Abingdon 01865-846000 - they will probably just advise that it is a known issue and to remain vigilant. Would also recommend you check to see if there is a local Neighbourhood watch person, they will then be able to distribute a warning to the locals.
Have you checked with the CSA? Just the best time to operate to get contact.
Would always recommend reporting suspicious incidents to Plod for they cannot work without the support of Public. But bear in mind when matters are reported there may well be only three of four out on the ground with dozens of calls waiting for attention so your call may not well attract the same attention as somebody reporting that they are having three bells of s**t being knocked out of them.
What your report will do will form the basis of intelligence that someone maybe operating illegally in the area and whilst not apparent brought to the attention of those on the ground to bear in mind when
whizzing from call to call.

I did eventually manage to get through to a very nice lady at Thames Valley Police who took all the details and agreed it sounded highly suspiscious.
