Liver function test in relation to DVLA

Someone I know is about to take the LFT and questioning from his local doctor after a short ban. he is to take it as a result of not giving a breath/blood sample when nicked, sorry apprehended.
He has been worrying for months and has stayed of the devil water for a period of two months in an attempt to clear himself out and increase the self punishment for being so bloody stupid.
With my limited medical knowledge, I'm a medical sales rep, the liver is a filter for the blood, how can they test Liver function without first giving a substance for the liver to filter out?
Anybody know exactly what is involved from the otherside of the desk?

Because of Hypertension controlled by tabs I have mine done every 18 months or so. Liver function test consists of sample of blood being taken and analysed.

humpy backed manic one Liebchen ... shall get the Mad Doc to look at this for you as he ist better qualified than I am ....

But basically....the test will establish how heavily he has been drinking over long period und what damages may have been done to his liver already und help treat the damages before it becomes dangerous. Not sure from your post as to whether police or his doctor have ordered this test.... (refusing to give sample ist offence.... I would have problem myself with blowing into that doo-dah... I run out of puff.... Have little card to give if stopped in a routine sweep und would hope they would offer alternative for me...but only drink saucers of milk anyway...)

But ... we have other means of establishing booze intake these days.... amazing what a lock of your hair can tell us...
