Red light/right of way?

Earlier, I was waiting to turn right into a side road. Just ahead on the road was a pedestrian crossing, which a man walked up to and activated. As the lights were on red I turned, but a car that had been some distance away carried on at the same speed and went straight through a red light.

Luckily there was quite a gap and I got through, but I couldn't believe it. But who was at fault - I've got a sneaky feeling it might have been me? Absurd if true, and will certainly make me think about how I judge traffic in future if it is...

Tricky one. He should, of course have stopped at the crossing, but what if the lights on his side weren't working?

As someone else on here said recently, treat every other road user as an idiot that's trying to kill you, expect the unexpected, and you can't go far wrong.
