drunk in charge of cycle
Discussion
I seem to recall some time ago a story of somebody who was banned from driving due to being drunk on a bicycle. Was this an urban myth, or did it happen.
Only thing I've found so far is this from Avon & Somerset police web site "Riding a pedal cycle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is an offence if the rider is incapable of controlling the cycle. There is no offence of being in charge of a cycle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs but the Licensing act 1912 has an offence of being drunk in charge of a carriage, and a bicycle is a carriage!"

I wolud imagine it was an offence, i think you can be done for breaking the speed limt..
Any way, the offence for drink driving i think is DRUNK AND IN CHARGE OF A VEHICLE.
If your drunk in the back of your car asleep, i think the same applies....
may be wrong, im sure someone will correct me

Nope, you cannot be done for "speeding' on a pedal cycle because it is not 'a motor vehicle.'
But as stated can be done for wanton furious riding.
S 30 (1) RTA 88 outlines the offence of riding a cycle on a road or other public place, whilst unfit to ride through drink/drugs to such an extent as to be incapable of having proper control. No specific power of arrest.
No breath test procedure involved. Opinion in BAGS (Breath, Action, Gait and Speech).
But under Licensing Act 1872 S 12 - being in charge of
any carriage (includes pedal cycle)on any public
Highway or public place is an offence with POA.
Power of a Court to disqualify from driving a motor vehicle exists on conviction for ANY offence by Court so authorised by Sec of State. (S 146 Power of Criminal Courts (Sentencing) Act 2000.)

This did actually happen to a student here at Nottingham uni!!!
Don't think he got any points or fines, just told not to cycle to the pub again!
(or the guy who was stopped on a dark road with no lighting, riding a bike in all black clothing, no lights or reflectors carrying 2 bags of shopping! Priceless!)

With regards to speeding on a bike I thought this was taking it too far. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/dorset/3619372.stm

That would be funny if it wasn't true! Total madness!

We do want to encourage cyclists to use the seafront

I sense deja vu here...

IIRC the actual offence is 'furious and wanton cycling' and is an offence under an Act that's well over 100 years old.
Yes, that's it, a reportable offence.
If cycling furiously and wantonly, please let me know what you look like, I still haven't sussed it.

The pedalling brigade got quite worked up a few years ago about 'serious' cyclist on a training run through the centre of Cambridge (yep, cars-out-Cambridge) being stopped and done for furious cycling.
It was pointed out that he was only doing 25mph so it seemed unfair. However, it was pub closing time and he was, allegedly, weaving amongst the departing drinkers without slowing down.
Good practice for a 2 wheel slalom I suppose ...
