Getting fined for no tax

I was supposed to be taxing the car today - tax runs out on the 30th.
I cannot find the insurance certificate anywhere so they are sending me another one out. They said it could take between 5-7 days to arrive
When does the £80 fine actually kick in? My plan is to wait till tomorrow and hope it comes through the post, then I can renew it at dinnertime.
If it doesn't come in the post tomorrow, will I have to go down and SORN the car until it arrives - seems a bit silly for the sake of a couple of days. The car will have to stay off the road - obviously, but the paperwork is a bit of a pain.
Why-o-why didn't my wife tell me it was due and why didn't she do it when the reminder came instead of waiting till now to tell me.

Apparently you can buy VED online now - the DVLA is aupposed to be able to check your insurance without needing to see the certificate.

Had a good look around the DVLA website but couldn't find anything to confirm this.
Reading the rules, it would appear there is no "grace" period after the expiry date, but you can get your application brought forward upto 2 months in special cases.
Unfortunately, this doesn't really help me. Looks like I'm in for a day of form filing.
I heard about being able to tax on line couple of months ago and queried this with DVLA. It is being worked on but as yet they do not want it in the public domain, hence no reference on their site so far.
Tax expires 30th November 2004. Computor sweep done on after 1st January 2005 at which date those vehicle untaxed over the preceeding month or not SORN, the Reg Keeper can expect to receive a 8o note fine from DVLA.
Whilst there is no such thing as 14 days of grace certain latitude is allowed by DVLA in relation to unlicensed vehicle. If as you say you are Insured then MIB record of this on APNR should show if stopped when you can explain. What you have to watch out for is Traffic Wardens and the like that might ticket you for failing to display a current Licence - no prisoners taken?

I bought my tax on-line at the beginning of this month. It was simple and painless but you can only use a debit card NOT a credit card. You need a reference number which will be printed on your renewal form. The system checks your insurance and MOT against a database first before continuing to process payment and the tax disc arrived a few days later. As mentioned by DVD above, bear in mind that there is an offence of "not displaying" so even though you are officialy taxed, until it arrived you could still be prosecuted if you got stopped by a jobsworth policeman.

This same situation once happened to me. Go to the post office and they will give you a covering receipt or something like that. Then you're covered until you get the paperwork in order.

Are you saying that you got your tax disc without the documents or just a reciept that you have paid the renewal but just havn't got the disc yet?
Either way, I'm not using the car until I have a disc, it'll be parked up on my drive.
I know a few people have said i'll be fine, but honestly - I don't trust these buggers nowadays.
There is no grace period at all.
I was away for a month a while ago and my tax was overdue by 2 weeks. As the car was off the road, there was no problem being caught driving as the car was garaged. The SORN declarationshould be made and you have to get it to them before the next month trips over after it was due. ( obviously declaring it off the road when the tax ran out.
Went to the PO to renew it 2 weeks late and i asked there what the score was, they told me that once a month has gone by after the VED has ran out, an automatic £1000 fine is issued if no SORN has been recieved.
So as for still driving around for the few days, me, personaly, wouldnt risk it but then you dont have half of the Derwentside police trying to take your licince off you.
