Found some cash in my street the other day. Thought it might have come from a house where I saw people leave a minute or two before. Popped round no answer. Left a note with them asking them to phone if it was theirs. Left it 24 hours, then handed it in to the local police station.

I told the young chap on the desk (a PCSO) that I had found £10 and wanted to hand it in. He fixed me with a stare while mentally saying to himself "Are you insane" and then proceeded to process the paperwork. In and out in 2 minutes.

Am I insane? Should I have just pocketed it? Am I wasting their time?

you definitely deserve applause for honesty and effort! I reckon that for a tenner I'd probably not have bothered. Would hand in a fifty I think. (I hope - never found one so who knows!)

Sorry, if you drop money in the street don't expect it back. Lesson No.1 in life.

I do however admire your honesty in handing it in. I am not sure I would feel too happy pocketing it, but I would not waste my time at the cop shop either....

blimey, fair play to you. However, as someone else said, I wouldnt expect to ever see the money again if I dropped a tenner (or any money come to that) in the street. Therefore, the last place I would think to look for it would be the cop shop.

An offence of "theft by finding" would occur if you had kept the money and someone had seen you...

However, a prosecution would be very unlikely....

Might just belong to a poor old pensioner who had designs on it for warmth and food.

Don't forget to make an enquiry said PS as if not claimed then you can have it. Time period used to be 3 months but get the feeling this was reduced to 1 month.

When I was a nipper I found a ten bob note in an envelope on a grass bank. It had been there for a while because it was wet and the ink on the envelope had faded.

I took it to the village bobby (we had them in those days).

About two months later the bobby called round at our house. He had traced the owner and he gave me half a crown as a reward! I was chuffed to bits, and it taught me that honesty pays.

Even now, I would still hand in anything of value that I found.

Won't someone please think of the pensioners!!! Sorry, couldn't resist.

That was what went through my mind. If someone lost some money and really needed it then the CopShop would be the obvious place to go (for me anyway).
