You mean I'm not the only one who works strange hours and/or strange places. Pay attention - I was highlighting the fact that rather a large number of people seem to have nothing better to do mid-afternoon that extract the michael.

Ahhhh! So that's what they were doing. With a bit of practice on their part and a few subtle hints I might eventually get the joke.
Flat in Fifth said:
is frowned upon is it?
Nothing wrong with messing about in a light hearted way. I'm sure that gone, towman, and their ilk will agree. Do they do it on the hard shoulder, and the custody suite too? But I'll tell you what - I bet Alastair Darling and Blunkett and their Ilk agree with you ever more than they and I do. I bet they were breathing a sigh of relief when their staff reported that not only was there no serious major opposition to their new proposals, but in fact, rather than motorists taking a keen interest in matters political and legal, they were far more interested in an altogether different Ilk.
Flat in Fifth said:
Gassing station is a bit like a virtual pub. Like in real pub there is a cross section of society, not a total spectrum but parts of it.
Yeah. You mean you get the guardianistas in one corner. In another the sandalistas. In yet another, a few loony right wingers who want to do outrageous things like not pour their money down the drain, not work more hours to support the feckless work shy parasitic leeches, than they do to fund their retirement income, health cover, kids education and the real needy, and, shock, horror, complain about the people directly and indirectly sucking them dry having the bare faced cheek to actually put physical and legal barriers to them trying to work and live their pack horse lives.

Oh, and then you have the other corner, by the door to the Ladies, full of drunken lads harassing any passing female and mercilessly taking the piss out of anyone not in their crowd, especially if their minds are too narrow to encompass the full breadth of page 3 as their daily diet of "news".

Ever noticed in a real pub or other regular meeting place there are some people who wouldn't sit at one end of the bar because some boring old fart sits down there and drones on. Equally there are others who don't mix with the football obsessed group because it doesn't interest them and they'd rather talk about cricket, or the telly, or chicks or whatever.

If you find the discussion too serious / light then sit on another table, simple; job done and sorted.

If I and others want to have a laugh, then providing Ted doesn't object then that is OK. Others have discussions serious and light hearted about subjects that personally I find deadly tedious, or maybe think "How silly" or "Yuk, how unpleasant."

However I don't bore into the discussion and start providing links to my own and other threads all over the place and killing a conversation that others find interesting by trying to divert it onto my own agenda regardless of how worthy or correct that other thread is. Yet you do it all the time, leopards - spots, seen it done before on here and elsewhere.

(BTW having seen how you operate before you start being a smartass and quoting left right and centre I can tell you I linked to another thread of mine the other day because I wanted to hear Tonyrec's respected opinion re PCSO's from his parallel thread.)

Try this one - next time you have nothing better to do than take the p!ss in an Ilk thread, try popping into a pub and observe some of the characters there. Like the one who, on seeing a group sitting down having a serious conversation insists on barging in and taking the p!ss.

And then watch, when the p!ss artist won't leave them alone, they move to another area to have their serious converation.

Only for him to follow.

Once you've broadened your mind enough to stretch your head enough to accomodate binocular vision, you might stop seeing things so one dimensionally.

Before you raise the fact that I, shock, horror, contribute to other people's threads - I contribute. If someone starts a thread on a particular topic, they are inviting comment and debate on that topic. And that is what I try to do. With a post "discussing" my posting patterns and habits.

So as not to take that thread even further off topic, I shall reply to his post there here -

I take it that's a NO then Ed, No room in your world for humour. God! You wouldn't last 5 minutes where I work AND we still manage to do a serious responsible

So do we. But do you go and scribble jokes all over each other's reports and letters? Do you insert "schoolboy" humour into their presentations after their final rehersal? Do you, ha, ha, ha, let the tyres down when they are off to an urgent meeting or even, ho, ho, ho, ho, ho cut their brake pipes? How about switching the contents of of an oxygen cyclinder, he, he, he, he, he. Or even take the safeguards out of dangerous or life-saving kit, har, har, har, har, har!

Oh, and when someone is telling a client how wonderful your team is, do you make silly "V" signs behind their heads, and do the coffee-shake, before telling the client that, actually, he'd be better off going to a competitor?

8Pack said:

People accuse me of having no sense of humour. Perhaps I should work my way up to understanding it in easy stages. Perhaps by working out what "do you?" means.

Clearly you diesel ed need help, take heed of the following friendly comment and advice or not. I'm not going to take the pee nor rant.

Firstly I'll respond to everything you have posted above that is worthy of an answer.
diesel ed said:

There, soon sorted that one. And yes that is a serious answer in case you wondered.

You know I used to have some respect for you too, but you have been told on here about the confrontational style turning some people off and that it often prevents or hinders you getting a message across which has some merit. Heard that somewhere before haven't we?

This other person whose name begins with b was also given a similar message on this forum, and on another one. Possible resistance to learning here.

You are serious about getting your point across, that is fine, free speech and all that. With free speech comes responsibility however.

Have you in your diesel ed persona, and possibly in other multiple identities, (don't know don't care) noticed the number of times someone opens up a response to one of your posts with "I know I'm going to regret this but....." you got one the other day from stresseddave, a very objective reasoned contributor.

If he thinks like that, what about the more volatile?

Doesn't that tell you something? It means that there are a lot of people out there who won't answer your points.

It means that the very thing you are trying to promote, namely discussion, is being stifled by the very way you discuss.

What happens then is that you are increasingly ignored, not for the reasons you think actually. Some unfortunately turn you into a laughing stock, and sadly that is what you are becoming.

I really don't care if you are bogush or not.

Funnily enough for the record on another forum that individual was banned and came back under another id. When the style was clocked and someone, not me btw, pointed out the possibility of the new identity the response was remarkably similar to your response under the same circumstances here. It was proved by IP address traces that the individual was posting under multiple identities and therefore in my mind and that of others guilty of being economical with the truth. I'll stop short of using the L word.

Friendly advice, take it or leave it. You have some good points, sometimes obscure but fair enough. Equally some points are utter utter trash, but if they are your opinion fair enough.

Just chill and perhaps you'll get your message across somewhat better.

diesel ed said:
So, that's how not to take the pee! Count the patronising comments, and the insults in that! I'll try not to copy your style.

So, tell me, when someone posts a serious question and gets loadsa silly responses, piss takes and insults, that's my fault, is it? Down to me? When someone posts a post defending motorists and the "motorists" rip him apart then that's his own fault, after all, he's "preaching to the converted" isn't he?

But I'm not referring to myself there, but to others I've seen get exactly the same treatment as I have received. And reviewing Mr Bogush's posts I note he's seen people getting slaughtered by the Ilk, dived in to defend them from the bullies, and get a good kicking himself.

Only recently I posted a warning to love machine in The time is coming for a camera destruction derby. Only for the Ilk to horn their way in and start hi-jacking his thread, taking the piss out of him and his post, polluting his thread with Ilk postings, and discussing Left handed lesbian trombonist asylum seekers for some perverse reason.

Comments please!

I also started the NOT Time is coming for cam destruct'n derby threadto respond to an off topic post addressed to me on that thread to try to prevent it deteriorating further. I didn't work of course. Is that down to me? Or the Ilk, who, of course also corrupted the new thread as well as continuing to corrupt the old one?

Comments please!

You keep accusing me of being a bully. Let's see -

a) I try to make my point and stand my ground.

b) I try to defend others who are trying to make their point.

c) Others try to drown my on topic posts with off topic garbage.

d) Others try to drown out other people's on topic posts with off topic garbage.

e) People seem to want to get rid of me.

And I'm the bully!?!?

It's true what they say - if you stand up to a bully they usually run crying to teacher!

Now, who did that?

A few other points -

a) confrontational style turning some people off/ Possible resistance to learning here/ With free speech comes responsibility however.

I hope you're not referring to me!

Try reading the threads (I know, I'm copying that from your mate's classic thread!). I suppose it's a bit like motoring. People complain about all the terrible speedophile motorists. But there are hardly any. It's just that you only notice those. Try reading the threads until you spot my first "confrontational" post. Then backtrack and see how many preceeded it. And then go forward again and see why I've finally become confrontational!

b) Stressed Dave

Oops, perhaps I'm autistic, or something (like a sociopath? , or a psychopath? )

Where did he become stressed? I thought we were just having a good debate!

(Or was he "Stressed Dave" to start with?)

c) With free speech comes responsibility however.

Like keeping myself to myself on my own threads you mean? And only posting on relevant threads? And trying not to rise to the incessant bait and insults? And not degrading every Speed, Plod and the Law thread with garbage which would be an insult, never mind totally off topic, on General Gassing or The Pie and Piston? You mentioned your right to have a laugh on another thread. What about your responsibility to refrain from having a laugh on serious threads on serious forums and finding a more appropriate one to post on? Or is it just that you find General Gassing and The Pie and Piston too serious for you?

Towman once mentioned something similar, might have been on your mate's final thread. Something about not coming to the SP&L forum for homework but to enjoy himself.

His idea of fun? -
towman said:
Sorry to say, I used to play this game when out shopping with Mrs T. I`d either get bored or start putting unhealthy, expensive stuff in our trolley, so she`d send me off to play.

After getting bored (again) with the usual........
Putting stuff in other peoples trolleys
Taking stuff out of other peoples trolleys
Moving other peoples trolleys
etc etc etc

I would go to the car park, scoping for the "front door haunters", wait until someone had seen me walking towards my car and then just as they pull up waiting for the vacant space, open the car, get my smokes out and stroll off. Hours of fun.

Steve
One of your Ilk?

And I'm the one who needs help, doesn't deserve respect, has a possible resistance to learning, is a a laughing stock........

Two final points before I end yet another (totally uncalled for?) rant -

a) economical with the truth. I'll stop short of using the L word.....

If someone asked you have you had an affair with "Mrs X" would you tell the truth and say "Yes, I am happy to confirm and make public the fact that "Mrs X" has been committing adultery with me and that "Mr X" is a cuckold" ?

b) Your hangups with links

Why?

I get the impression that you are a technical bloke. When you read a technical paper or report do you tippex out all the references first just to make life more interesting?!
