Big Brother cometh
Discussion
This thread is based on a discussion happening in a parallel universe. NTL have recently sold their TV transmission business (i.e. most of Britain's TV masts) to Australian group Macquarie. Macquarie also own the company behind the M6 Toll, and now own TV masts covering virtually all of the country. Guess what they might be able to use TV masts for.
The infrastructure is now in place to control our access to and use of private transport. Our location, speed, destinations will soon be capable of centralised monitoring and control. When the EU version of GPS goes up, another nail will go in the coffin of freedom of movement and individual privacy. Putting receivers at the side of every road is a job that will delay "Big Brother Day" for a while, 15 years has been suggested.
What's more the government have announced that they are going to increase the price of 7GHz bandwidth by 20% each year. This is used for fixed and transportable links, for example to get pictures back from a television outside broadcast. With this year on year increase in costs anyone using this bandwidth will very quickly find it less expensive to use satellite communications and the word is that the government want this bandwidth for another purpose. Many of the traditional users of this bandwidth will likely be off it within a few years. Knowledge of the location of a vehicle or an ID card could be getting easier and easier.
Finally we have the continued running down of the armed services and the transfer of many police powers to government agency staff, all in the name of efficiency / cost-effectiveness or whatever. These military and quasi-military organisations will soon be a mere shadow of their former capabilities. No doubt EU forces populated by politically correct obedient automatons will take their place.
With the current generation of inept politicians facing a real opportunity to control an enfeebled public like never before - scaring individuals and businesses into compliance with every mad hatter notion from Osama Bin Liner through road safety to global warming - we appear to have limited time left to avoid becoming anything other than drone agents of a Borg State. It won't matter if the government is Noo Labia or Tory, who could resist the new "control society. Resistance is futile...
Conspiracy theory or tomorrow's reality?
Edited to add - mods, this involves speed, plod, law, as central issues so thought it should go here. But up to you...

The Trouble with increased government control is that ultimately it leads to revolution when the natives finally gett pi$$ed off.
When will these muppets realise this ( or even look at a history book)
Ok i already know the answer.... When they are lined up against the wall and offered a last cigarette.

Sorry, smoking's been banned in public places!!

Just worth pointing out one thing ... GPS receivers are passive devices. They can't tell anyone else where you are unless they are attached to something which can broadcast information (e.g. a mobile phone). If you want to, you can easily stop a GPS system from working by putting a small piece of metal foil on top of the receiver's antenna. GPS systems in isolation cannot undermine anyone's privacy.

hey, what the hell. We'll have our Suzuki Wagon-R's, and 1.0 Corsas. And other nice cars, and 50cc scooters that won't do more than 30mph.
What fun we have to look forward to. Errrr, no fun whatsoever, but it was never about fun was it? this is just a way to stamp their boot over our faces. And we voted for them.

This is sounding like the Kengestion Livingdrone election - no cab driver I've spoken to has either voted for him or met anyone who claims they did. So who did vote Tiny Bliar and the Control Freaks in? For sure if it happens again it won't be easy for our nation to recover any of its vital functions. Meanwhile there doesn't seem to be any significant number of PHers arguing for the conspiracy theory so it looks like the noo labia stealth approach to population control is real and will likely be as successful as their stealth approach to taxation. Just how far will the electorate be pushed on these fundamental issues before realisation dawns?

:scratchin: so lets see , you can not drive a car , eat fatty food , drink too much , smoke or hunt , but prostitutes are ok ,ohh and marijuana will be ok soon .

Just 20% of the Voting population! So much for the plonkers who say - "I'm not voting 'cause my vote won't make a difference."
Their lack of vote sure made a difference.
Think about it......20% of the voting population committed us to a Police state.
Your choice of party vote should be free, but voting should be compulsory - that way we may get in a government the people truly want.

drive a car -- yes you can, but you pay for it
eat fatty food -- yes you can, and soon you'll pay extra tax for it
drink too much -- yes you can, and you pay for it
smoke -- yes you can in your own home, and you pay for it
hunt -- odd, this? Surely not a principle??
prostitutes -- the opposite principle???
grass -- must have missed this one
As always the government is balancing prohibition against tax collection. Which one wins really depends on the net benefit to the treasury. Apart from hunting it seems.
Perhaps prostitutes are soon to be taxed as well? A quango will be required to monitor them -- Offsex? -- and a tax will be collected to fund it. Now what would we call it? Rude Tax?
Truth is, this is the outcome of control-by-statistics. Everything is a case of creating a set of statistics, and allowing theoretical ideologies to decide whether you want them at 0 or 100%, then slowly erode the country towards them through banning, regulating, taxing and being generally obtrusive with the law.
