You will find that i (we) would not enforce a limit that we think is absolute pants.

Trouble is - on some nice bits of rural DC that you could "press on" a bit.. say 90, 100 leptons, now makes you into a social outcast when the limit comes down to 50 or 40. I don't expect limits to rise significantly in my lifetime. Maybe the golden years are now behind us. That does depress me, but the little ray of sunlight was your post regarding not always pinching people, but I guess even that must change if your masters say so.
I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that all roads limited by NSL's were the responsibility of the local county council for maintenance etc. Those roads that were subject to posted speed limits (30,40,50 etc.) are the responsibility of cantral Govt.
So a penny pinching county council could downgrade a NSL to a 40 and not only score numpty points for 'helping reduce speed related accidents' but also no longer need to spend £x on looking after said stretch of road.
Eventually enough people will get caught speeding on this newly downgraded road to warrant a 'road safety camera' - bringing in much needed cashflow to the cash strapped county council to set up another support group for one armed black lesbians or some other minority group.

My brother in law was done for 74 mph in a new 40 limit on a dual carriageway at 3.00 a.m.
He was fined £400 and banned for 4 weeks but no points on his licence

The lower the limits, the revenue goes up and the respect goes down.
I always, always wanted to own a TR7 when I was small. There was a guy at the end of my parents road who was both very cool and owned one. wodnerful looking cars to an 8 year old!
Carl - Herts are doing thisd all over the bloody place. One of the local derestricted they've just changed to a 40 I also ignore - mainly because i reckon it would be impossible to speed-gun along (v twisty) and I'd see anyone following me in time I hope!

well Herts do have the website www.hertsdirect.org.uk - which has it's own 'repaort a road fault' section as well as a few other hings.
I have to say that im pretty impressed with how quickly they respond (I had my own roadworks the day afeter nearly killing myself in a pothole!) and this county does seem to spend a fair bit on the roads (how do Bedfordshire actually manage to get away with blatantly having lethally maintained roads everywhere?), so maybe sending troublesome emails asking for justification and reasoning behind specific limit changes might be a way forward?
