Parking Ticket Question

Here's a quickish one for you,
A few weeks ago I received a parking ticket, for allegedly parking in a residents bay that had been suspended. I live in No. 11, the bay had been suspended from 8-11. I know that I was parked on the ther side of my house, ie. on the 12 side of it. So I sent a letter to the council pointing this out, and they have replied saying that "according to the parking attendants notes, you were parked 5 yards from a time plate that stated the permit holder's only spaces had been suspended"
1) There are two timeplates on this bit of the street, one is up at about No.16, and if I was 5 Yards away from this one, I would have not been in the suspended area. The other is down at about No.8, but there are double Yellow lines for 5 yards on either side, so I couldn't have been parked there in any case
2) I know that i was parked about 30 yards from this post, on the other side of my house
The problem is that I cannot prove this. they have told me that if I do not pay withing 14 days then a Notice to Owner will be sent out, and I can make a formal representation.
My question is really, is it worth me doing this for the sake of £50? Is it likely that I will be able to convince them? I suppose it will come down to my word against the parking attendants, which makes it useful that I couldn;t have been parked where he/she said anyway.
What do you think?

They rely on people not being bothered to contest when they ticket you illegally.

I once parked across a friend's driveway in Cambridge (no lines of any description - parking allowed). Clearly Mrs Curtainpeeking-Busybody next door decided to call a traffic warden, as I returned to my car to see a ticket on it for "unnecessary obstruction", demanding 40 of my after-tax pounds. I wrote a letter to the parking office stating that it was my friend's driveway and he asked me to park there, so there was no obstruction. I even sent them a diagram - and kept a copy for my own records.
I got no response, so I waited until the court date.
The council didn't even bother sending a representative. It was thrown out and I got my costs for the day. But it all comes from the taxpayer in the end, so they're not fussed.
It's just one of thos nasty things in life that don't need to exist. A bit like wasps.

Heard similar stories. The Councils earn so much money from people who just pay up that they don't even bother sending someone to the Court. Good luck with it........

What do wasps do then ? My gf asked me this once and I couldn't think of anything a wasp did that was useful.
I've never seen a wasp near a flower - they might cross pollenate rubbish bins though!

At the start of the year they're carnivorous and keep down pest insect numbers. It's only at the end of the summer that they become the pain in the ar5e, sugar seeking, missiles we all love. Or so I believe.

I've just seen something else in the letter they sent me
"As the suspension of these bays are paid for by the party involved in the work being carried out, it is the Council's obligation to issue Penalty Charge Notices for such a contravention"
I take this to mean that the money from my fine will go to the person who paid for the bay suspension?
Yeah Right!
