Dangerous Police Behaviour
Discussion
The other day i saw a police car with blue lights and siren on hit a speed bump at about 50mph and launch in the air I was Walking on the pavement at the time and got very scared when he (think it was male) hit the ground and sweved all over the place nearly mounting the pavement.
I know they have to respond to things quickly but that was just stupid especially out side a univercity during the day time.
It was an Astra aswell and the only ones ive seen round hear (Huddersfield) have non emergancy vehicle writen on so are presumably not driven by trained drivers.
This was just taking the piss the police should set an example and it angers me when they set a bad one.

Are you sure you saw that right.
A car couldn't take off from a speedbump. The faster you approach a speedbump the less likely your car is to move at all due to the momentum it carries.
Going at a speedbump at full tilt is unlikely to make the car body move at all but will force the suspension to make a sudden change or even bust it.
If you go over a speed bump fairly slowly the car body will follow the contour of the speedbump.
But the faster you go the less this happens. So.

Erm hang on what are you saying here? Lets just backtrack a second. Some
wit loony drug and prostitute addicted liberal democrat council tribe member decided, for no good reson, to put silly bumps in the road. Since they were installed, extra people have died as a direct result of the installation. Some poor unsuspecting cop is on his way to a shout which could be my mother being murdered by a chav (cos the same
witted moron that put the bumps in 10 years ago, is now a Labour MP and thinks its a good idea to have criminal activity counted as part of the economic growth strategy.) and he hits a bump which bolloxes the suspension on the car, my tax paid for and also scares you. You, however, conclude the cop is stupid. I conclude that the local council ammount to nothing more than the "stopping things from getting done" department. Direct your anger and frustration at the source of the problem please. I want my police force to show up fast and sort it whatever it is. I do not give a toss about PC lefty green sandalistlentilistthinkofthechildrenistkneejerkreactionrybollox Oh and BTW does the Univercity (sic) do any research into road transport systems by any chance?
So he almost lost control whilst driving quickly?
How many of us can say we never have?
And if he was giving it so much pedal the likelihood is that the job was worth it - assault in progress, urgent assistance etc.
My bruv is BiB and has to cane beat cars and has to put up with gutless shitters and vans that handle poorly yet if it was you who was taking the pasting off some crazy I'm sure you would appreciate him getting his foot down en-route.

Nonegreen, Abso-bloody-lutely!
If they really need to slow us down in these areas, they should follow the Dutch example of block paving or cobbles.
It's a cheapjack British answer again, "dump a load of tarmac down there son, that'll slow em down".
We spend 100's of years trying to improve our roads, only to do THIS?

Nonners.
Cop on his way to a shout. Making progress, observes zebra crossing, looking around for peds, maybe doesn`t notice raised crossing......WTF...Bang! Hardly dangerous driving. Is it possible to summons a lump of tarmac for "dangerous lurking"?
Could make a smartarse comment about universities and spelling, but won`t.

How true this is, particularly in relation to this road. I can't remember if there are five or six of these raised zebra crossings all in a stretch of road about 1/3 of a mile long. Some you can take at 30mph, some you have to slow down to 20mph to climb over.
All put there to help university students get back to their halls of residence.
...and it's very easy to make a car airborne from these. We have two similar ones in the village where I live and every so often you'll see a car (stolen presumably) being driven at great speed over these things time and again just to see how far they will fly, with bits falling off when they land!
These would be the full width "table tops" so beloved of any West Yorkshire city. They are pretty well marked to begin with but as the markings wear they become very difficult to make out in any but dry conditions. Result big surprise for drivers who do not know about them as they suddenley feel and hear the damn thing! Not surprised the Police driver got launched. Even when you know there are there they the size of the step can vary and catch you out!
One W.Yorkshire city doesn't love them - the humps have been reduced in width to allow Buses and EVs to travel safely over them, in effect you now get a lump on either side of the road [ bit like one lump or two?
]. Result - speeders now know they can straddle the humps and not have to slow down or incur any damage to car and if nothing's coming the other way you can drive between the humps with impunity!.

Sir,
Nonegreen, your post does you much credit.
The biggest complaint of recent years is the lowering response times from the police. Traffic laws are permitted to be broken by responding police officers, so long as no danger is caused as a result.
Yet again, I read of the public complaining about police vehicles not being driven to their satisfaction.
I'm led to believe that the police service is the only emergency service with continued driver assessment and re-tests. Our paramedic friends and fire service colleagues undergo no such rolling and continued scrutiny.

I'd be interested to see the collision stats for police, ambulance and fire drivers. I do wonder if the increase in police collisions is due to the fact that the advanced driving training was cut back substantially a few years ago.
Even though speed bumps are stupid the fact is they are there and there is no point in risking more lives in a manover that probably only saved him a second or 2.
I know speed bumps are generally stupid but in this case cars would not otherwise slow down and there was a guy kiled a couple of years back so maybe not such a bad thing in this case.
PS sorry about the spelling am shit at it and there is no spell check in the CAD room.

I also wonder whether reductions in police staffing mean that it is less likely that you will find a BiB nearby so they have to come from further away, more ground to cover, even more urgent that they get there asap, you've got to go faster. Seems to me they wouldn't be forced to take so many risks if there were more of them.

You're quite right! A student was killed on Firth Street which may be why they put the humps in. He was one of the dozens of dickhead students that ran straight out of the hole in the wall outside the School of Comp & Eng every day. It was an accident waiting to happen. It didn't matter what speed traffic was travelling, student peds would suddenly appear from nowhere and jump into the road - dickwits.
The common sense approach to road safety would have put a railing up to stop this behaviour. And some more railings further along where the same dickwit students reckoned it was "well kewl" or "wicked" or some other bollox to regularly push each other off the pavement into the traffic.
But no! Much better to spend large amounts of my council tax putting lumps in the road that f
ck my Range Rover's suspension every morning on the way to work - at a time when the lazy bl
dy students are still fast akip.
Oh, and for your info another student got squashed soon after the humps went in......which just goes to show how well they're working!
Hardly surprising really coz the clueless twats still leap into the road without looking. And don't get me started on their behaviour at the ring road crossings either

Well you won't learn to design things with the help of a computer by moaning about the police on here!
