Is this harrassment?

I was recently out in my 911 turbo in terrible conditions. Obviously I was driving carefully, and well under the speed limits. All of a I saw a police car behind me, but thought nothing of it. They followed me for miles, but didn't pull me over. I then saw them pull to the side of the road (without indicating) and stop. I carried on only to find them in my mirrors again about two minutes later. They repeated this at least six times before we came into a village with a really long straight. They stopped just after the apex of the bend, and I could just see their front bumper. I continued to the end of the straight, then round a corner out of the village. They were up behind me within thirty seconds. They must've done at least double the 30mph limit to catch up with me so quickly and again just sat behind me.

Eventually they gave up and turned off. The speeding is one thing, but I'm sure comes as no surprise to anyone who knows a copper. Excess speed is always used when returning to the station to end a shift, or when getting pizza.

But the can only be two reasons that they did what they did. One the word 'Porsche', the other the word 'turbo'.

Surely this cannot be allowed?

I'd have stopped and asked them, politely of course, what they were doing.

This is allowed. It is covered by regulations which allow the Police to ignore speed limits for Policing purposes.

I had this once, years ago. I pulled over in the first layby I came to, thus putting the ball in their court as to whether they would pull in behind me and indicate they would like a word or carry on. In my case they carried on, looking at my new Elise. I was 24 (and a serving Police Officer) at the time so I guess they were just checking the car out to make sure I hadn't just nicked it!

Don't get me wrong, I'd have fully appreciated them checking their computer to see if the car had been reported stolen, but they didn't even bother to do that!!

If they had......................they'd have learnt it was untaxed.

I have a friend who works in Lincoln Traffic Dept..I'll tell him never to stop you Simon and that your lack of road tax is just an oversight

I've tried doing something similar back to the police before. I was sat in a layby minding my own business when this police van pulled up beside me and the driver started shouting across the gap to me. I opened my window and asked him to repeat what he said and he started asking me what I was doing there, where I was from etc... (all without leaving his cosy warm van).

Anyway, when he drove off I thought I would follow and see what the police get up to on their rounds. After about 5 miles driving through the local villages he pulled into a dead end street and parked up so I carried on about 50 yards and sat there for 10 minutes waiting for him to come out. Eventually I got bored and nosed my car past the junction to see what he was doing and he zoomed out and headed in the opposite direction to the way I was facing (must have been doing at least 50 in a 30 zone).

Guess they don't like people watching what they do too closely

that may be why you were be followed? 1 strike = 7 days out of date. Just waiting for you to do something to make Strike 2.......?

I got paranoid on my journey to work the other day as this guy was about 3ft from my back bumper for a while and I was getting a bit stressed about a potential road rage situation.

He backed off after a while and I realised that he was probably trying to read the badge on the back of my car. It is an FTO and the words FTO are indented on the back and not easy to see unless you are close up. I did exactly the same when I saw an FTO on the road for the first time.

Just goes to show how easy a situation can be misread.

I appreciate all the help you can give me, however the Lincoln Traffic Police all seem sensible guys. They're more interested in stopping dangerous driving, rather than excess speed.

I have had this as well. I think you will find its usually whilst they do a check to ensure the car is stolen. Thats certainly the excuse they gave me. Wanted to ensure it was my car and I hadn't stolen it, and was waiting for my mates before doing a ram raid or similar. I noticed that the police car was positioned so I couldn't get out of my space!

Sounds like a good idea to me, a bit like that proactive policing we all want!

However, although I would hope that dangerous driving is targetted as much as excessive speed is...I can't help but wonder, when your county is absolutely saturated with speed cameras....

Any thoughts of having a thrap around the fens have just been totally and permanently dispelled.

Well that's good news. I thought Lincolnshire was one of the hard line anti-speed areas - not that I would know about any of them from personal experience.

That's misleading. Look at the huge areas between Lincoln and Horncastle, and from there to the coast. Nothing. For the largest county in the country to have 35 cameras is below average.
