Community Service

Well, seeing as how Magistrates appear to be forbidden to actually lock anyone away in case it ruins the Home Sec's prison budget, not a week goes by without the local paper reporting that some charming individual has got to pay £20 compensation, £2.50 Court Fees and do 200 hours community service for some lowlife activity.

But I'm curious...

Just what is community service?

I mean, there must be hundreds of bods doing hundreds of hours around here alone - but you never see anyone in an orange jumpsuit being forced to pick up litter do you?

Why not?

But what I'm asking I suppose - without going out to smash a window & get 1st hand experience - just what does Community Service consist of and do the little bar stewards actually do it when told to?
